The answer, as recorded

For small law firms (solo up to ~20 people), here's how I'd rank them: **1. Clio (Clio Manage)** - The default recommendation. Biggest install base in the category (~150k+ legal professionals), the deepest integration library, and the most mature billing/trust accounting. It's the safe pick because you won't outgrow it and every bookkeeper, consultant, and bank integration already knows it. Starts around **$49/user/mo** (EasyStart) and climbs to roughly $89-$149/user/mo for the tiers that actually include the good stuff - note Clio renamed all four tiers in mid-2026 (Starter / Core / Signature / Elite), so older comparison articles won't match what sales quotes you. The cheapest tier is deliberately thin; budget for the middle tier. **2. Smokeball** - Best if your firm under-bills its time, which most small firms do. Its passive/automatic time capture runs in the background and records work you'd otherwise forget to log, and its document automation (deep Word integration) is the strongest in the category for high-volume forms work - family, estates, conveyancing, immigration. Highest user-satisfaction scores of the group (4.7/5 on G2). Also ~$49/user/mo entry. Trade-off: historically Windows-centric and less flexible than Clio. **3. MyCase** - Best value play. Similar feature footprint to Clio with AI features included rather than upsold, and strong client-portal/communication tools. Often lands cheaper at comparable functionality (quoted anywhere from $39-$49/user/mo depending on plan). Good choice if Clio's pricing for the tier you need feels steep. **4. CosmoLex** - Pick this one specifically if you want to drop QuickBooks. It has real double-entry accounting plus trust/IOLTA compliance built in, so you run the whole firm - billing, general ledger, trust - in one system. That's a genuine cost and headache saver for a solo or 2-3 lawyer shop. Slightly weaker ratings elsewhere (4.2/5), so you're trading polish for the integrated books. **5. PracticePanther** - The lean option. Simplest to set up and learn, ~$49/user/mo, good if you want matters, billing, and payments working by Friday and don't need heavy automation. **6. CasePeer or Assembly Neos / Filevine** - Only if you're a plaintiff/personal-injury firm. CasePeer and Neos are built around PI case lifecycles (medical records, liens, settlements, negotiations); Filevine is the most customizable for genuinely unusual workflows. Generic software will fight you on PI; these won't. A couple of practical notes: nearly everyone advertises "$49" and nearly nobody actually pays that, because trust accounting, automation, and AI sit in higher tiers - get a written quote for the specific tier before comparing. Annual billing typically cuts the effective rate. And all of these run a free trial, so shortlist two and actually migrate five real matters into each. One assumption I made: "small businesses" here means small *law firms*. If you meant a non-law small business that needs to manage contracts and legal spend, that's a different category entirely (Ironclad, Lexion, or just a Dropbox Sign + Google Drive workflow) - say the word and I'll lay that out instead.
