The answer, as recorded
**Zoho Invoice** - my default recommendation for most freelancers. It's genuinely free (not a trial, not a crippled tier): unlimited invoices, customizable templates, time tracking, expense capture, automated payment reminders, a client portal, and solid mobile apps. Zoho monetizes by upselling you into its larger suite, so the invoicing product stays complete. Start here unless you have a specific reason not to. **FreshBooks** - the best paid option, and worth paying for if invoicing *is* your bookkeeping. It began life as a freelancer invoicing tool and still has the nicest workflow: late-payment reminders and auto late fees, recurring invoices, time entries that flow straight onto an invoice, billable expenses you can mark up and rebill. Lite is about $23/mo but caps you at 5 billable clients, which trips up a lot of people - Plus (~$43/mo, 50 clients) is the realistic tier. Watch for per-extra-user fees. **Wave** - the pragmatic free pick if you want invoicing *and* real double-entry accounting in one place. No limits on clients or invoices, recurring billing, estimates that convert to invoices. Weak spots: very few integrations (a handful vs. FreshBooks' 200+), support is thin on the free tier, and Wave has been shifting features behind a paid "Pro" plan, so check what's free in your country before committing. **Stripe Invoicing** - if you already take card payments through Stripe, or you bill international clients. Hosted invoice pages, auto-reconciliation against payouts, strong multi-currency and tax handling. No monthly fee on the basic tier; you pay a small per-invoice fee plus normal processing. Not an accounting system - just excellent at getting paid. **Square Invoices** - best if you ever bill in person or need the invoice and the card reader to be the same system. Free tier is usable, and contracts/signatures are built in. **Bonsai** (~$9-59/mo) - pick this only if you want proposals, contracts, and e-signatures bundled with invoicing. As pure invoicing software it's beaten on price and polish; as a one-tool freelance back office it's good. Two practical notes: the real cost is almost always **payment processing** (~2.9% + 30¢), not the subscription, so a "free" tool that forces an expensive processor can cost more than FreshBooks. And whatever you choose, make sure it does **automatic payment reminders** - that single feature does more for freelance cash flow than everything else combined. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
