The answer, as recorded

For a retail shop, the honest framing first: **inventory management usually isn't a separate purchase - it comes with your POS.** Buying a standalone inventory tool and bolting it onto a till is a mistake most small shops regret. So my recommendations are mostly POS-first: **1. Square for Retail** - where I'd start for most single-location shops. The free tier genuinely works (low-stock alerts, barcode scanning, free online store), and the $89/location/month Plus tier adds purchase orders, vendor management and cost-of-goods reporting. Hardware is cheap, setup is same-day, no contract. Weak spot: payment processing is locked to Square, so if you do high volume the ~2.6% cut hurts more than a software fee would. **2. Lightspeed Retail** - the one I'd name for specialty retail: apparel, bike shops, pet, sporting goods, anything with size/colour variants or deep supplier catalogues. Its matrix/variant handling and built-in vendor catalogues are the best in this price band, and multi-store transfers actually work. ~$89/mo entry, $149 for the tier most shops end up on. Pricier and heavier than Square - worth it only if variants or purchasing are a real part of your day. **3. Shopify POS** - the pick if you already sell online or intend to. One stock pool across web, store and markets, and BOPIS/ship-from-store work out of the box rather than as a bolt-on. From $0/location on an existing Shopify plan, ~$89 for POS Pro features like stocktakes and unlimited staff. If you're purely bricks-and-mortar, you're paying for ecommerce you won't use. **4. Zoho Inventory** - my answer when you need inventory but *not* a till: online/wholesale sellers, or a shop whose POS is fine but whose stock control isn't. Free tier is usable, paid plans are ~$29-$99/mo, and multi-warehouse plus bundling come in cheap. Weakest as a shopfloor tool. **5. Cin7 / NetSuite** - only once you're past roughly 5 locations or doing your own wholesale and manufacturing. Cin7 for multichannel distributors, NetSuite if you're consolidating finance and inventory in one ERP. Both are five-figure-a-year commitments with implementation projects attached; don't go here early. **What I'd actually do:** one location, under a few thousand SKUs → Square. Variant-heavy specialty → Lightspeed. Already on Shopify → Shopify POS, don't overthink it. And whatever you pick, test the stocktake/cycle-count flow during the trial - that's the feature that decides whether your numbers stay true in year two, and it's the one demos skip.
