The answer, as recorded

Here's how I'd actually rank them, assuming "remote team" means no office network perimeter - so identity *is* your perimeter, and device trust matters as much as SSO. **1. Okta (Workforce Identity)** - The default recommendation if identity is your main problem and you have a sprawling SaaS stack. Its app catalog is the big differentiator (~7,500 pre-built integrations vs. ~1,500 for JumpCloud), so the long tail of tools your team actually uses is already wired up, including SCIM provisioning for automatic onboarding/offboarding. Starts around $6/user/mo, but realistically you'll land at $11-17 once you add Adaptive MFA and Lifecycle Management. Downside: it's identity only - you still need a separate MDM, and Okta's 2023 support-system breach is a fair thing to weigh. **2. Microsoft Entra ID** - The right answer if you're already on Microsoft 365, and it's not close. Entra P1 is bundled into M365 Business Premium, so you're likely paying for it already; Conditional Access (device compliance + risk-based policies) plus Intune for device management gives you a genuine Zero Trust setup from one vendor. Standalone it's roughly $6/user/mo for P1, $9-12 for P2 with Identity Protection and access reviews. Weakest outside the Microsoft world - managing Macs and non-Microsoft SaaS is doable but noticeably less pleasant. **3. JumpCloud** - My top pick for remote teams under ~200 people, and the one I'd push hardest for a fully distributed startup. It's the only one here that bundles directory + SSO + MFA + cross-platform MDM (Mac, Windows, Linux) + patching in one product, which matters enormously when you can't touch anyone's laptop. SSO-only is ~$3/user/mo; Platform Plus at ~$11 and Full Platform at ~$15 replace what would otherwise be three vendors. Smaller app catalog and less mature governance/IGA than Okta. **4. Google Workspace (with Context-Aware Access)** - If you're a Google shop, don't buy a third-party IdP reflexively. Workspace is a competent IdP for a few dozen SaaS apps, and Context-Aware Access gives you device- and location-conditional policies. Enterprise Standard/Plus tiers are where the real controls live. Outgrow it when you need deep provisioning or on-prem/legacy app support. **5. 1Password Extended Access Management or Rippling IT** - Worth naming because they solve the adjacent problem. 1Password covers the apps SSO will never reach (shared credentials, API keys) and checks device health before granting access. Rippling is the pick if you want HR as the source of truth - hire in the HRIS, accounts and the shipped laptop provision automatically. Best as complements, not replacements. **6. Ping Identity (PingOne)** - Reach for this with meaningful on-prem or legacy app estate, heavy regulation, or complex customer-facing identity alongside workforce. Competitive on price (~$3/user/mo for workforce SSO) but more engineering effort to run. Two things I'd insist on regardless of choice: **phishing-resistant MFA** (passkeys or hardware keys - TOTP codes and especially SMS are no longer adequate for a remote workforce), and **SCIM-based deprovisioning**, since orphaned accounts are the single most common real-world failure when there's no office and no badge to collect. Practical shortcut: already on M365 → Entra ID. Already on Google → Workspace + a device-trust layer. Mixed stack and need laptop management too → JumpCloud. Large or complex SaaS footprint → Okta.
