The answer, as recorded
## The short version For a retail shop, the best gift card platform is almost always the one already built into your POS. Gift cards only work if the card can be sold, swiped, balance-checked, and redeemed at the register without staff doing anything special - and a bolt-on platform that doesn't integrate with your register is worse than a mediocre native one. So the real question is which POS you're on. **1. Square Gift Cards** - my default for most independent shops. Physical and digital cards, balance checks right in the normal checkout flow, no separate contract, and you can start with a $0/month plan on hardware you already own. Lowest friction to just get running before the holidays. ([Square fees overview](https://swipesum.com/insights/square-fees-explained-understanding-your-payment-costs)) **2. Shopify POS gift cards (native)** - the pick if you sell online *and* in-store. Cards work across both channels from one balance, and Shopify doesn't charge a per-sale gift card fee on top of normal processing. If your web store matters, this beats Square. ([POS comparison](https://taylorsicard.com/blog/shopify-pos-vs-square-clover-lightspeed)) **3. Lightspeed Retail** - best if you're inventory-heavy (apparel, bike, wine, outdoor, anything with variants and reorder points). Native gift card tender, no gift card sale fee; you're paying for the inventory engine, not the gift cards. ([Lightspeed/Clover/Square rates](https://taylorsicard.com/blog/shopify-pos-vs-square-clover-lightspeed)) **4. Clover Gift Cards** - only because so many shops are already on Clover through a merchant-services rep. It works fine. I wouldn't *switch* to Clover for it, and watch the reseller contract - Clover pricing varies wildly by who sold it to you. **5. Factor4** - the one I'd name if you want gift cards that are *not* tied to your POS vendor: processor-agnostic, in-store + online + mobile on one platform, ~11,000 locations. Good for multi-location independents or anyone who expects to change POS and doesn't want to reissue every card. ([Factor4 profile](https://loyalty360.org/companies/factor4), [overview](https://www.digitaltransactions.net/power-up-holiday-sales-with-factor4-gift-cards/)) **6. Givex** - step up from Factor4 for multi-location, franchise, or retail+hospitality groups that need gift and loyalty on one cloud platform with real enterprise reporting. Overkill for one store. ([Givex](https://www.channelchek.com/company/givex-corp-cana)) **7. Valutec** - a long-standing agnostic gift processor, now inside the Global Payments/Worldpay family after the January 2026 acquisition, serving 60,000+ merchant locations. Name it if you're already a Global Payments/Worldpay merchant; otherwise there are easier paths. ([Green Sheet](https://greensheet.com/spotlight&spotlightId=130&featuredContentId=188)) **8. Rise.ai or Govalo** - Shopify *add-ons*, not replacements. Reach for these only when native cards aren't enough: Rise.ai for store-credit wallets and automated cashback (~$20/mo), Govalo for a genuinely nicer gifting/recipient experience. ([Shopify gift card apps](https://easysellapp.com/blogs/wiki/best-shopify-gift-card-apps-2026)) **9. Yiftee** - different use case worth knowing: community/downtown gift cards that work across a group of local shops. If a BIA or merchants' association is organizing this, that's the category. **Skip Toast** unless you're food service - it's a restaurant POS that happens to mention retail. ## Two things that matter more than the vendor choice - **Verify current pricing directly with the vendor.** The published gift card fee details for these platforms are genuinely thin online, and the comparison pages I found varied on numbers like Square's per-sale gift card fee. Ask specifically about: per-card cost, any activation/load fee, balance-inquiry fees, monthly minimums, and what happens to outstanding balances if you cancel. - **Check your state's escheat/unclaimed-property rules.** Unredeemed balances - commonly cited around 6-10% - get treated as margin in vendor marketing, but in many US states that money is legally owed to the state, not to you. Worth a question to your accountant before you book breakage as revenue. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
