## My actual recommendations, in order **1. WatchGuard Firebox T25 / T25-W** - My first pick if you're shipping boxes to people's homes. The reason is one feature: zero-touch cloud deployment. You build the config in WatchGuard Cloud, drop-ship the unit to the employee, they plug it in, and it pulls its config down. Nobody has to walk a salesperson through a web UI over the phone. Central management of 30 scattered units from one console is the whole problem with remote-team firewalls, and WatchGuard solves it better than anyone at this price. ([hummingbirdnetworks.com](https://www.hummingbirdnetworks.com/articles/best-firewalls-for-remote-hybrid-workplaces), [netgate.com](https://netgate.com/resources/5-popular-work-from-home-network-firewalls)) **2. Cisco Meraki MX67/MX68** - Same cloud-managed, zero-touch story, and the dashboard is the best in the business. Auto-VPN between sites is genuinely one click. I rank it second only because it's pure subscription: when the license lapses, the box stops forwarding traffic. That's a real liability for a small company. If you already run Meraki APs, move it to #1. **3. Fortinet FortiGate 50G/70G** - Best raw security-per-dollar, and the one I'd pick if you have an actual IT person. Fortinet builds its own ASICs, so inspection throughput holds up under full SSL decryption in a way the competition's doesn't, and FortiClient + FortiGate ZTNA gives remote users agent-based access without a classic VPN concentrator. The catch is FortiOS complexity and the UTM bundle renewal cost. ([itproexpert.com](https://itproexpert.com/best-business-firewall/)) **4. Netgate 2100** - Best value for the technically inclined, ~$349 for pfSense Plus on real hardware. Unlimited VPN tunnels, no per-seat licensing, no subscription to lapse. It's what I'd put in a small main office on a budget. It is *not* what I'd mail to a non-technical remote employee - there's no zero-touch provisioning and no multi-site console worth the name. ([netgate.com](https://netgate.com/resources/5-popular-work-from-home-network-firewalls)) **5. UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra ($129) / UDM Pro / UniFi Gateway Max** - Unbeatable price and a genuinely pleasant UI, plus UniFi Site Magic auto-builds site-to-site VPN across locations for free. I put it fifth because IPS is signature-light compared to Fortinet/WatchGuard, and Ubiquiti's support model is community forums. Fine for a 10-person startup, not for anyone with a compliance auditor. ([intellcom.net](https://intellcom.net/en/product/03159/68/UniFi-Cloud-Gateway-Ultra-Ubiquiti/), [lightyear.ai](https://lightyear.ai/tips/unifi-dream-router-versus-cloud-gateway-ultra)) **6. Firewalla Gold SE (~$579) / Purple SE** - The one I recommend for individual remote employees rather than offices. No recurring fees, phone-app managed, built-in VPN server and client. An employee can self-install it in ten minutes. It's a prosumer device, not enterprise gear, but for "give the CFO working from home something better than an ISP router," it's the right answer. ([thewearify.com](https://thewearify.com/?p=216303), [vintagevinylnews.com](https://vintagevinylnews.com/best-network-security-appliances/)) ## One thing worth saying If "remote team" means genuinely distributed people and cloud/SaaS apps - not branch offices - appliances are probably the wrong purchase. You'd be buying 30 boxes to backhaul traffic to a datacenter your apps don't live in. The thing I'd actually deploy first is **Tailscale** (WireGuard mesh, trivial to roll out, SOC 2/HIPAA-friendly), or **Cloudflare Access** if you're already on Cloudflare, or **Twingate** if you need granular resource-level policy with a good admin GUI. ([tailscale.com](https://tailscale.com/compare/twingate), [twingate.com](https://www.twingate.com/blog/comparisons/the-top-10-alternatives-to-tailscale)) Buy appliances for the places you have *premises* - the office, a warehouse, a lab with equipment that can't run an agent. Buy ZTNA for the people. Most remote-first companies need one T25 or Netgate at HQ and Tailscale everywhere else.

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
