The answer, as recorded
The big thing to sort out first: "financial planning" splits into two different products. Your general ledger / fund accounting system is the system of record; an FP&A layer sits on top of it for budgeting, forecasting, and scenario planning. Most nonprofits under ~$2M only need the first one plus a spreadsheet. Here's who I'd actually name, roughly in the order I'd bring them up: **If you need the accounting system itself (GL + fund accounting)** 1. **QuickBooks Online + a budget spreadsheet** - unglamorous, but the honest recommendation for most nonprofits under ~$500K. Cheapest path, every bookkeeper knows it, and class/location tracking approximates fund restrictions well enough. Don't buy FP&A software to solve a problem a tab in Google Sheets solves. 2. **Aplos** - the best purpose-built option for small nonprofits and churches. Real fund accounting natively rather than QuickBooks workarounds, plus donation tracking built in. This is where I'd go if restricted-fund reporting is already painful. 3. **Sage Intacct (Nonprofit)** - the default serious answer at $5M+, multi-entity, federal grants triggering a Single Audit, or international ops. Strong dimensional reporting, which is what makes grant and program allocation tractable. 4. **Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT** - the other enterprise contender, mainly worth it if you're already on Raiser's Edge and want the fundraising-to-finance link. Otherwise Intacct usually wins on flexibility. 5. **Araize FastFund** - niche but genuinely good if grant compliance and FASB reporting are the whole job and you want something cheaper than Intacct. **If your GL is fine and you need the planning layer** 6. **Martus** - my first pick for nonprofit-specific FP&A. Built around department-led collaborative budgeting (program directors enter their own numbers), with automatic actuals sync from Financial Edge NXT and Sage Intacct. That last part matters more than feature lists. 7. **Budgyt** - best for multi-department orgs with heavy grant allocation across programs. Starts around $4,788/year, so it's a real budget line, not an impulse buy. 8. **PlanGuru** - the low-cost option for small orgs that want rolling forecasts and multi-year projections without a platform commitment. 9. **Vena or Datarails** - Excel-native FP&A, strong on scenario planning. Caveat worth stating plainly: neither is nonprofit-specific, so you'll configure restricted-fund tracking yourself or pay an implementer to. Only worth it if your finance team lives in Excel and won't leave. My short version: pick from #1-#5 based on size and grant complexity, and only add something from #6-#9 once budget season has actually become a multi-week email-attachment nightmare. Buying an FP&A tool to compensate for a messy chart of accounts just makes the mess faster. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
