The question asked, verbatim: best financial planning software for freelancers
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Wave mentioned
Wave - Where I'd start if you're earning under ~$75k or just going solo.
- FreshBooks recommended
FreshBooks - My pick if invoicing is the job - retainer clients, hourly work, project billing.
- Zoho mentioned
Zoho Books - The best paid value, especially if you're under ~$50k revenue (free tier) or already live in other Zoho apps.
- Zoho Books mentioned
Zoho Books - The best paid value, especially if you're under ~$50k revenue (free tier) or already live in other Zoho apps.
- QuickBooks mentioned
Deeper accounting than FreshBooks at a lower price than QuickBooks;
- QuickBooks Solopreneur mentioned
QuickBooks Solopreneur - Worth it mainly if your accountant insists on QuickBooks or you expect to hire.
- QuickBooks Self-Employed mentioned
Note that QuickBooks Self-Employed was discontinued and Solopreneur replaced it - and Solopreneur is genuinely thinner: no balance sheet, no receipt capture, limited reports.
- Xero mentioned
Xero - Only once you're past solo work: subcontractors, inventory, multiple entities.
- Found mentioned
Found - Business checking that auto-sets-aside estimated taxes from every deposit and preps your Schedule C, with bookkeeping and invoicing built in.
- Lili mentioned
(Lili is the alternative if you want higher savings APY, but it charges $15-55/month for comparable features.)
- Keeper mentioned
Keeper - Scans your linked accounts for missed write-offs year-round and files for you.
- TurboTax mentioned
TurboTax Self-Employed or H&R Block Self-Employed - For the actual April filing.
- TurboTax Self-Employed mentioned
TurboTax Self-Employed or H&R Block Self-Employed - For the actual April filing.
- H&R Block mentioned
TurboTax Self-Employed or H&R Block Self-Employed - For the actual April filing.
- H&R Block Self-Employed mentioned
TurboTax Self-Employed or H&R Block Self-Employed - For the actual April filing.
- YNAB mentioned
YNAB (~$109/yr) - The one I'd push hardest for irregular income.
- Monarch Money mentioned
Monarch Money ($14.99/mo or $99.99/yr) - Easier onramp than YNAB, better net-worth tracking, and better if you share finances with a partner.
- Retirement mentioned
Retirement (the part most freelancers skip)
- SEP IRA mentioned
Solo 401(k) at Fidelity or Schwab - Free to open, and it beats a SEP IRA for most freelancers because you contribute as both employee and employer, so you hit the $72,000 (2026) limit at a much lower income.

The answer, as recorded
There's no single tool that does this - freelancers end up with a stack of two or three: one for the business books, one for personal cash flow, one for taxes/retirement. Here's what I'd actually name, in order. ## Business books & invoicing **1. Wave** - Where I'd start if you're earning under ~$75k or just going solo. Invoicing, expense tracking, and accounting are free for life; you only pay when clients pay by card. Nothing else gives you this much for $0, and it's enough until your books get complicated. **2. FreshBooks** - My pick if invoicing *is* the job - retainer clients, hourly work, project billing. Best-looking invoices, built-in time tracking, painless late-payment nudges. Weaker as pure accounting software, stronger as a get-paid machine. **3. Zoho Books** - The best paid value, especially if you're under ~$50k revenue (free tier) or already live in other Zoho apps. Deeper accounting than FreshBooks at a lower price than QuickBooks; the trade-off is a clunkier interface. **4. QuickBooks Solopreneur** - Worth it mainly if your accountant insists on QuickBooks or you expect to hire. Note that **QuickBooks Self-Employed was discontinued** and Solopreneur replaced it - and Solopreneur is genuinely thinner: no balance sheet, no receipt capture, limited reports. Don't pick it expecting the old QBSE. **5. Xero** - Only once you're past solo work: subcontractors, inventory, multiple entities. Overkill for one person. ## Taxes & the quarterly problem **6. Found** - Business checking that auto-sets-aside estimated taxes from every deposit and preps your Schedule C, with bookkeeping and invoicing built in. The tax set-aside solves the single most common freelancer failure. One caveat: **in-app tax filing was discontinued in March 2026**, so you'll still file elsewhere. (Lili is the alternative if you want higher savings APY, but it charges $15-55/month for comparable features.) **7. Keeper** - Scans your linked accounts for missed write-offs year-round and files for you. Best for people whose deductions are scattered across personal cards. **8. TurboTax Self-Employed or H&R Block Self-Employed** - For the actual April filing. H&R Block does the same Schedule C job for meaningfully less than TurboTax's $129 federal + $64/state. ## Personal cash flow **9. YNAB** (~$109/yr) - The one I'd push hardest for irregular income. Zero-based budgeting makes you allocate money you *actually have*, not money you expect, which is exactly the right model when a client pays 45 days late. **10. Monarch Money** ($14.99/mo or $99.99/yr) - Easier onramp than YNAB, better net-worth tracking, and better if you share finances with a partner. Lets you flag income as irregular without blowing up the month. ## Retirement (the part most freelancers skip) **11. Solo 401(k) at Fidelity or Schwab** - Free to open, and it beats a SEP IRA for most freelancers because you contribute as both employee and employer, so you hit the $72,000 (2026) limit at a much lower income. Use a provider like Carry or Solo401k.com only if you need Roth or alternative-asset options the brokerages don't offer. A **SEP IRA** is the simpler fallback if you want near-zero paperwork. **If you want just two things:** Wave (or FreshBooks if you invoice heavily) + YNAB, with a Found account to auto-park your quarterlies. That covers 90% of it for under $120/year. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
