Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest trying them: **1. FreshBooks** - My default pick for most freelancers. Expense tracking isn't a standalone problem for freelancers; it's tangled up with invoicing, time tracking, and getting paid. FreshBooks does all of it in one place, bank feeds auto-import transactions, and you can mark an expense billable and push it straight onto a client invoice. That last bit is the thing generic expense apps can't do. **2. Wave** - If you're early, low-volume, or just budget-conscious. Accounting plus invoicing plus expense tracking, and the core is genuinely free (they monetize payments and payroll). Receipt scanning sits behind a cheap paid tier now, but for a freelancer with a few dozen expenses a month, it's hard to justify paying more. **3. Expensify** - Best if your actual pain is *receipts*. Lots of paper, lots of travel, lots of card swipes. SmartScan is still the best-in-class receipt OCR, and the individual "Track" plan is free with unlimited scans and mileage tracking. The catch: it's an expense tool, not accounting - no invoicing, so you'd pair it with something else. **4. QuickBooks Solopreneur** - Pick this if tax season is the thing that scares you, or if your accountant already lives in QuickBooks. It auto-categorizes, does GPS mileage, estimates quarterly taxes, and spits out a Schedule C-ready report. ~$20/month, and worth knowing that Intuit retired QuickBooks Self-Employed to new signups back in 2024 - Solopreneur is the successor, so don't go looking for the old product. **5. Zoho Books / Zoho Expense** - The value play. There's a free tier for very low revenue and paid plans well under the competition, with a solid mobile app. Less polished than FreshBooks, more features per dollar. **Honest take:** if you invoice clients, go FreshBooks or Wave - the invoicing integration matters more than marginal receipt-scanning quality. Only reach for Expensify if receipt volume is genuinely your bottleneck. One caveat worth flagging: searching this topic surfaces a lot of content-marketing pages from tiny apps reviewing themselves as "best" (BudgetX, Finny, PocketClear, Billdock and similar). I've deliberately left those out - not because they're bad, but because there's no independent evidence either way, and accounting tooling is something you want to still exist in three years when you need old records. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
