The answer, as recorded
There's no single "best" - it splits sharply by clinic size and specialty. Here's who I'd actually name, roughly in the order I'd shortlist them: **1. Elation Health** - my default recommendation for small independent primary care (1-10 providers). It just won Best in KLAS for Small Practice Ambulatory EMR/PM for the second year running. The charting is genuinely clinical-first (a clean three-column "clinical profile" view rather than a billing form with notes bolted on), and it now bundles integrated billing and ambient AI notes. Cheap to start, fast to learn. **2. athenahealth (athenaOne)** - the pick if billing and payer connectivity are your pain point. Won Best in KLAS Ambulatory EHR for 11-75 physician practices for the fifth consecutive year, and broke into the 75+ category for the first time. It's a percentage-of-collections model, so it's pricier than flat-fee rivals, but their revenue cycle team chases claims for you. Best value for a growing multi-provider clinic. **3. ModMed (Modernizing Medicine)** - if you're a specialty clinic: dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, gastro, plastics, podiatry. The specialty-specific content and the iPad-native EMA interface mean far less customization work than a generic EHR. Consistently top-rated in the 2026 Black Book specialty rankings. **4. eClinicalWorks** - the broadest feature set per dollar for small-to-mid practices, with telehealth, patient portal, and RCM in one stack. Support quality is the common complaint, so weigh that, but the functionality is hard to beat at the price. **5. CharmHealth** - the budget option, and a serious one. Free/low tier for very low encounter volumes, strong for solo, direct-primary-care, functional medicine, and behavioral health. Rates better on user satisfaction (≈4.2/5) than several much larger vendors. **6. Tebra** (the Kareo + PatientPop merger) - good for independent practices that want EHR, billing, and patient acquisition/marketing in one vendor. Decent all-rounder, not best-in-class at any one thing. **7. Epic** - only worth naming if you're joining or affiliating with a hospital system. It holds ~41% combined market share and dominates on interoperability, but it's priced and implemented for health systems, not for an independent clinic. If your local hospital offers Epic Community Connect, that's often the cheapest way for a clinic to get it. Also reasonable depending on fit: **DrChrono** (mobile/iPad-first, solo practices), **AdvancedMD** (growing practices), **NextGen** (small-to-mid specialty groups), and **Canvas Medical** (if you want a developer-extensible, API-first EHR). Two things that matter more than the brand: get the pricing in writing with every add-on listed (interface fees, e-prescribing, patient portal, and data-migration costs are where quotes blow up), and insist on a contractual data-export clause so you can leave with your records in a usable format. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
