## What I'd actually recommend **1. Dropbox Sign (formerly HelloSign) - my default pick for most startups.** It does one thing well: get signatures, fast. Clean UI, painless for the counterparty (no account required), reusable templates, and a genuinely good developer API if you later need to embed signing in your own product. Free tier is 3 signature requests per 30 days with unlimited self-signing, then ~$15-25/user/mo. The API is priced separately and gets steep - $75/mo for 50 requests, $250/mo for 100 - so treat that as a later-stage decision. **2. SignWell - best price-to-capability if you're watching every dollar.** Nearly the same core experience as Dropbox Sign at a lower price point, 3 free docs/month, and the API is pay-as-you-go after 25 free docs/month rather than a big monthly floor. For a seed-stage team sending a handful of offer letters and MSAs, this is the pragmatic choice. **3. PandaDoc - if your signatures are attached to *selling*.** It's really a proposal/quote tool with signing bolted on, and that's the point: templates, pricing tables, content library, view analytics on who read what. If a salesperson is sending the doc, PandaDoc. If an ops person is, don't bother. API dev plan is ~$40/mo, and there's a free sandbox with 60 docs/year for testing. **4. DocuSign - when your customers or investors expect it.** It's the expensive, heavyweight option and you don't need it early. But it's the one enterprise procurement and legal teams recognize, it has the deepest integration ecosystem (Salesforce especially), and envelope pricing (~$0.10-$1 each depending on plan) is negotiable at volume. Buy it when a deal requires it, not before. **5. Documenso - if you're technical, privacy-constrained, or high-volume.** Open source (AGPL-3.0), TypeScript, self-hostable for free with no document caps, and it does real PKCS#12 cryptographic sealing with a cert you control - not just a picture of a signature pasted on a PDF. Worth it if you have EU/GDPR data-residency requirements, or if SaaS per-seat pricing stops making sense. There's also a hosted version on the same codebase, so you can migrate either direction. **6. Adobe Acrobat Sign - only if your team already lives in Acrobat.** Fine product, awkward as a standalone purchase. The case for it is that you're already paying Adobe and PDF manipulation is a big part of your workflow. ## The short version Start on **Dropbox Sign** or **SignWell** free tiers - three documents a month covers an early-stage startup longer than you'd think. Add **PandaDoc** only if sales owns the documents. Reach for **DocuSign** when an enterprise counterparty makes it a condition. Go **Documenso** if you have engineers and a compliance or volume reason to own the stack. One caveat on the research: a lot of the "best e-signature for startups 2026" listicles are SEO pages published by small e-signature vendors ranking themselves #1. I've ignored those and named tools with real track records. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
