Microsoft Purview DLP (if you're on Microsoft 365) - Start here.

Business Premium already includes cloud DLP for Exchange email, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams, so your marginal cost is zero and you can have credit-card/SSN/ID-number policies running in an afternoon.

Catch: endpoint DLP (blocking USB copies, print, local uploads) is not in Business Premium - that needs E5 or the Purview add-on, roughly $12/user/month.

- Netwrix Endpoint Protector recommended
Netwrix Endpoint Protector - My pick if your actual fear is data walking out on a USB stick or laptop, and especially if you have Macs or Linux machines.

- Safetica compared
Safetica - The closest thing to "DLP that a non-specialist can run." Cheaper than Endpoint Protector, good default policies, strong reviews specifically from small-scale compliance use cases.
- Coro Cybersecurity mentioned
Coro Cybersecurity - Worth naming because it's purpose-built for the 20-200 employee market: DLP bundled into one platform with email security, endpoint, and cloud apps at one per-user price.
- Nightfall AI mentioned
Nightfall AI - Narrow but excellent: API-first scanning of Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, Jira for secrets and PII.

What I'd skip: Proofpoint, Varonis, Netskope, Forcepoint, Zscaler, and Trellix all show up on "best DLP" lists but are enterprise platforms with enterprise minimums and deployment effort.

# DLP for a small business - what I'd actually recommend The honest headline: for most small businesses, the best DLP is the one already bundled with the suite you pay for. Standalone DLP tools are built for companies with a security person, and they fail when nobody has time to tune policies. **1. Microsoft Purview DLP (if you're on Microsoft 365)** - Start here. Business Premium already includes cloud DLP for Exchange email, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams, so your marginal cost is zero and you can have credit-card/SSN/ID-number policies running in an afternoon. Catch: **endpoint** DLP (blocking USB copies, print, local uploads) is *not* in Business Premium - that needs E5 or the Purview add-on, roughly $12/user/month. ([CIAOPS guide](https://blog.ciaops.com/2025/06/09/data-loss-prevention-dlp-in-m365-business-premium-comprehensive-guide/), [Microsoft Q&A](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1221628/data-loss-prevention-in-business-premium-license-q), [pricing overview](https://research.aimultiple.com/dlp-pricing)) **2. Google Workspace DLP (if you're on Workspace)** - Same logic, worse news: DLP is **not** in Business Starter/Standard/Plus. You need Enterprise Standard/Plus, or you can bolt on Cloud Identity Premium without a full edition upgrade - that's the cheaper path. ([edition comparison](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/getting-started/editions/compare-business-editions), [DoControl breakdown](https://www.docontrol.io/blog/frontline-vs-business-plus-pro-vs-enterprise)) **3. Netwrix Endpoint Protector** - My pick if your actual fear is data walking out on a USB stick or laptop, and especially if you have Macs or Linux machines. It's cross-platform, modular (Device Control, Content Aware Protection, eDiscovery), 30-day trial, and genuinely the strongest host-level DLP at small-business budget. Buy just Device Control if that's all you need. ([Forcepoint comparison](https://www.forcepoint.com/de/blog/insights/best-dlp-software), [G2](https://g2.com/categories/data-loss-prevention-dlp/small-business)) **4. Safetica** - The closest thing to "DLP that a non-specialist can run." Cheaper than Endpoint Protector, good default policies, strong reviews specifically from small-scale compliance use cases. Pick this over #3 if you're all-Windows and want less tuning. ([PeerSpot reviews](https://www.peerspot.com/product_reviews/safetica-one-review-4547454-by-sobaan-shamsi), [aimultiple](https://research.aimultiple.com/dlp-pricing)) **5. Coro Cybersecurity** - Worth naming because it's purpose-built for the 20-200 employee market: DLP bundled into one platform with email security, endpoint, and cloud apps at one per-user price. You trade policy depth for not needing an admin. Good if you'd rather buy one thing than four. ([G2 picks](https://learn.g2.com/best-data-loss-prevention-software)) **6. Nightfall AI** - Narrow but excellent: API-first scanning of Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, Jira for secrets and PII. If you're a software or SaaS shop, this catches the leaks the others miss (API keys in Slack). Not a general DLP. ([G2](https://learn.g2.com/best-data-loss-prevention-software)) **What I'd skip:** Proofpoint, Varonis, Netskope, Forcepoint, Zscaler, and Trellix all show up on "best DLP" lists but are enterprise platforms with enterprise minimums and deployment effort. They'll quote you, but you won't finish the rollout. **One caveat on framing:** the widely-quoted "60% of small businesses never reopen after data loss" stat gets attributed to FEMA and is pretty shaky - and more importantly, it's about *data loss* (ransomware, dead drives), which DLP doesn't solve. If you don't yet have tested, offline backups and MFA everywhere, do those before buying DLP. DLP stops data leaking *out*; backups stop data disappearing. **My default:** On Microsoft 365, turn on Purview DLP this week at no extra cost, then add Endpoint Protector only if USB/laptop exfiltration is a real risk for you. On Google Workspace, price the Cloud Identity Premium add-on against just buying Safetica - for a small headcount, Safetica often wins.
