The answer, as recorded
## First, the fork in the road "Corporate card" now means two different products, and which one you want depends on one thing: whether you have an EIN and real cash in a business bank account. - **Fintech corporate cards** (Ramp, Brex, Rho, Mercury) - charge cards underwritten on your cash balance, not your personal credit. No personal guarantee, approval in minutes, expense software included. But they typically want ~$25k sitting in a linked business account, and most won't take sole proprietorships. - **Traditional business credit cards** (Chase, Amex, Capital One) - underwritten on *your* personal credit with a personal guarantee, but they give you a real revolving credit line and much better rewards/transfer value. If you're a sole prop or a two-person LLC with $4k in the bank, skip to the second list. ## Fintech corporate cards **1. Ramp** - my default recommendation. 1.5% cash back on everything, no annual fee, unlimited physical and virtual cards, per-card spend limits, and genuinely good expense automation (receipt matching, categorization, close-the-books workflows). The core software is free; the Plus tier is ~$15/user/month and most small businesses don't need it. Requires a US corporation/LLC/LP with roughly $25k in a linked business account. If you qualify, it's the best value in the category. **2. Brex** - pick this over Ramp if you're venture-funded, spend heavily on travel, or operate in multiple countries. The rewards structure is tilted toward high-growth companies and the global/multi-entity support is stronger. Overkill for a 5-person local business. **3. Rho** - the one to try if Ramp declines you. Qualification is more flexible, no personal guarantee or personal credit check, open to LLCs and C-corps with an EIN and formation docs. It leans toward businesses at least six months old and is most at home with VC-backed companies. **4. BILL Spend & Expense (formerly Divvy)** - best if your bank balance is on the smaller side, since it's the most forgiving on that front. Strong budget-first controls: you set budgets and the cards enforce them in real time. Rewards are less straightforward than Ramp's. **5. Mercury IO** - worth it mainly if you're already banking with Mercury, since it requires a Mercury account (and roughly $25k). No personal credit check, no sole proprietorships. Convenient, not a reason to switch banks on its own. **6. Rippling** - only if you're already running payroll on Rippling. The payoff is cards, payroll, and expenses in one system, which is a real advantage for international teams. ## Traditional business credit cards **1. Amex Blue Business Plus** - the best no-annual-fee card for most small businesses. 2x points on everything up to an annual cap (~$50k), then 1x. If you spend under $50k/year on the card, nothing beats it. **2. Chase Ink Business Unlimited** - 1.5% back on everything, no annual fee, and currently a $750-$1,000 bonus after about $8,000 of spend in the first few months. Best if you also hold a Chase Sapphire card, since you can pool points for transfers. **3. Capital One Spark Cash Plus** - the pick once you're spending $50k+/year. Flat 2% on everything, no caps, no categories, $150 annual fee that pays for itself above roughly $30k of spend. ## What I'd actually do Funded startup or an LLC with $25k+ in the bank: **Ramp**, and don't overthink it. Smaller or newer: **Amex Blue Business Plus** for the rewards plus **BILL Spend & Expense** if you need employee cards with hard spend controls. Note that the fintech cards are charge cards - balances are due in full each cycle, so they're not a source of float.
