Quick framing first, because it changes the answer: true corporate cards (Ramp, Brex, and most of that category) don't accept sole proprietors at all - they require a registered corporation, LLC, or LP with an EIN, and Ramp also wants ~$25k sitting in a linked business account.

The answer, as recorded
Quick framing first, because it changes the answer: true *corporate* cards (Ramp, Brex, and most of that category) don't accept sole proprietors at all - they require a registered corporation, LLC, or LP with an EIN, and Ramp also wants ~$25k sitting in a linked business account. So if you're a freelancer filing a Schedule C, the realistic answer is small-business credit cards plus one or two corporate-card programs that take sole props. **What I'd actually get** 1. **Amex Blue Business Plus** - my default pick for most freelancers. No annual fee, flat 2x Membership Rewards on the first $50,000/year with no categories to track, and the points transfer to airline/hotel partners directly from this card. Freelance spend is usually scattered (software, ads, contractors), so a flat 2x beats category cards. 2. **Chase Ink Business Unlimited** - the one to get if you want cash, not points. 1.5% flat, no annual fee, and the welcome bonus has been running well above Amex's (recently $1,000 after $8,000 spend). If you also hold a Sapphire or Ink Preferred, the points become transferable. Honest tradeoff vs. #1: better bonus, worse ongoing rate. 3. **Capital One Spark Cash Plus** - for freelancers with lumpy, large spend (ad buys, equipment, subcontractors). 2% flat with no preset spending limit, but it's a charge card you pay in full monthly and it carries an annual fee, so it only makes sense above roughly $50-60k/year of card spend. 4. **BILL Divvy Corporate Card** - the closest thing to a real corporate card that will actually approve a sole prop. No personal guarantee, built-in budgets and expense management, unlimited virtual cards, reports to business bureaus. Caveats: you need an EIN (free from the IRS, you don't need an LLC) and underwriting generally wants ~$20k+ in the bank. 5. **Ramp** (or Brex if you're venture-backed) - worth it only *after* you register an LLC or S-corp. Ramp is the better of the two for a one-person shop: 1.5% flat cash back, genuinely good receipt-matching and accounting sync, no fee. Brex's thresholds ($50k cash for funded startups, or $500k+ revenue commercially) rule out most freelancers. 6. **Found, Novo, or Lili** - if you'd rather skip credit entirely. These are business checking accounts with debit cards that accept sole proprietors using just an SSN, no minimum balance; Found and Lili also do quarterly tax-withholding and expense categorization, which is the actual pain point for most freelancers. Mercury and Relay will turn you down as a sole prop. **The practical move:** open an EIN and a separate business checking account first, run everything through one no-fee flat-rate card (#1 or #2), and only graduate to Divvy or Ramp when you have employees or contractors who need their own cards. The spend-control features that make corporate cards worth it don't do much for a team of one.
