Shopify - not a general CMS, but if a meaningful share of your clients sell things, don't force commerce onto a content CMS.
- Prismic mentioned
Several of the top-ranking "best CMS for agencies 2026" articles are thinly-disguised marketing from CMS vendors themselves (Prismic's blog ranking Prismic, ApostropheCMS ranking Apostrophe, and a couple of pages that exist mainly to promote a single product).

The answer, as recorded
## My actual recommendation, in order **1. Webflow** - my default for most agencies doing marketing/brand sites. Design control without a build pipeline, clients can edit without breaking layouts, and the Workspace model is genuinely built for agencies (client billing transfer, so you hand off the site invoice at launch instead of reselling hosting). Weak spot: deep structured content and anything with real application logic. **2. WordPress** - still the right answer more often than agency Twitter admits. Enormous plugin ecosystem, clients already know it, huge talent pool, and you can staff it cheaply. Pair it with managed hosting (WP Engine, Kinsta) and a block/ACF-based build standard. Cost is maintenance burden and security hygiene you own forever. **3. Sanity** - best headless pick for a general-purpose agency. Flexible content modeling, real-time collaboration, and Sanity Studio is a React app you can customize per client, which matters when you're shipping 20 variations of "the same" site. GROQ is a learning curve. **4. Payload** - the one I'd pick for Next.js teams and anything with product logic (portals, marketplaces, auth, workflows). It lives in your codebase and your database, so there's no vendor lock and no per-seat tax as the client's team grows. Needs real developers; not a hand-it-to-marketing tool. **5. Storyblok** - strongest visual editor among headless options, which is the #1 reason headless handoffs fail. Good when the client is non-technical but the build needs to be componentized across frameworks. **6. Contentful** - I recommend it mainly when the enterprise client has already specified it, or when you're delivering into a large org with governance/compliance requirements. Mature, well-known, and expensive; pricing gets painful on smaller accounts. **7. Statamic** - the pricing model is the most agency-friendly in the list: flat per-project license, no per-editor fees. Great fit if your team is Laravel/PHP. Smaller ecosystem. **8. Shopify** - not a general CMS, but if a meaningful share of your clients sell things, don't force commerce onto a content CMS. Use Shopify (plus Hydrogen if you need a custom front end). **Honorable mention: Drupal**, for public sector, universities, and multi-site/multi-language government work where its permissions and translation model still beat everything else. ### How I'd actually decide Pick **two**, not eight - a visual stack (Webflow or WordPress) for standard marketing sites, and one headless stack (Sanity or Payload) for custom work. Agencies lose margin on CMS sprawl, not on picking the "wrong" CMS. ### One caveat on the research Several of the top-ranking "best CMS for agencies 2026" articles are thinly-disguised marketing from CMS vendors themselves (Prismic's blog ranking Prismic, ApostropheCMS ranking Apostrophe, and a couple of pages that exist mainly to promote a single product). The ranking above is my own judgment, not theirs. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
