The question asked, verbatim: best community forum software for small businesses

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Discourse recommended
Discourse - my default recommendation for most small businesses.
  2. Google recommended
It's the modern standard for threaded discussion: great search, solid email digests, trust levels that let your community self-moderate, and it doubles as a public knowledge base that ranks in Google (a real asset if you're doing customer support).
  3. Circle recommended
Circle - pick this if your "community" is really a paid product: courses, memberships, events, paywalled spaces.
  4. Flarum recommended
Flarum - the best free self-hosted option if you want something that doesn't look like 2008.
  5. XenForo recommended
XenForo - a one-time $195 license, runs on normal PHP hosting, your data in your own database, and the deepest add-on ecosystem of any commercial forum.
  6. Wix recommended
Wix Forum - only if your site is already on Wix.
  7. Discord recommended
Discord - I'd mention it but push back on it for most businesses.
  8. Hostinger recommended

The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd try them: **1. Discourse** - my default recommendation for most small businesses. It's the modern standard for threaded discussion: great search, solid email digests, trust levels that let your community self-moderate, and it doubles as a public knowledge base that ranks in Google (a real asset if you're doing customer support). There's now a genuine free hosted tier (unlimited members, 2 staff seats, 5GB, a `discourse.group` subdomain), then Starter around $20/mo and Pro at $100/mo. You can also self-host for free if you have someone comfortable with Docker. Caveat: the jump to $100/mo for custom domains/themes/API is where small budgets feel it. **2. Circle** - pick this if your "community" is really a paid product: courses, memberships, events, paywalled spaces. It bundles community + courses + email + payments so you're not stitching five tools together. $89/mo Professional, $199/mo Business, plus a 2% transaction fee on the lower tier. No free plan. It's more "cohort/creator" shaped than "forum" shaped - threaded discussion is weaker than Discourse. **3. Flarum** - the best free self-hosted option if you want something that doesn't look like 2008. Lightweight, fast, genuinely good on mobile, runs on cheap ordinary PHP hosting. Trade-off is a smaller extension ecosystem, so check the extension list covers your must-haves before committing. **4. XenForo** - a one-time $195 license, runs on normal PHP hosting, your data in your own database, and the deepest add-on ecosystem of any commercial forum. Best value if you want a classic high-volume discussion board you fully own and you expect to run it for years. **5. phpBB** - free, boring, extremely stable, decades of documentation. Dated UI, but if you just need a working forum at zero cost and nobody on your team wants to maintain anything clever, it's a defensible choice. **6. Wix Forum** - only if your site is already on Wix. It's not a great forum, but "no new vendor, no new login, no migration" is worth a lot for a small team. **7. Discord** - I'd mention it but push back on it for most businesses. It's free and everyone under 40 already has it, but it's chat, not a forum: nothing is searchable or indexable, so your customers' questions don't accumulate into anything useful. Also a 10% platform fee on server subscriptions. Fine as a companion to a forum, bad as a replacement. **My short version:** try Discourse's free tier first - it costs nothing to validate whether people will actually post. If the community turns out to be a revenue product, move to Circle. If you want to own it outright and keep costs near zero, Flarum or XenForo. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
