The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest trying them: **1. Tidio (+ Lyro AI)** - My default suggestion for most small businesses. Genuinely usable free tier, intuitive builder, and Lyro handles FAQs, lead capture, and ecommerce tasks like order tracking out of the box. Paid plans land around $29-79/mo, though note Lyro is billed separately from live chat, so a realistic combined bill is more like $68-150/mo. Best fit if you sell online or need human handoff alongside the bot. **2. Chatbase** - The cheapest path to a "trained on my own content" bot. Point it at your website/docs/PDFs and you have a working support bot in an afternoon. Starts around $19/mo, Standard tier ~$49. Pick this if your need is really "answer questions about my business" rather than full helpdesk workflows. **3. Crisp** - The value pick. $0/mo tier with unlimited chats, and it's a real shared inbox (email, chat, social) not just a widget. Good when budget is the binding constraint and you'd rather have solid live chat with light automation than mediocre AI. **4. Intercom (Fin)** - The most capable AI agent of the bunch, and priced like it: ~$29/seat plus $0.99 per AI resolution, commonly $400+/mo at any real volume. Only worth it if support tickets are a genuine cost center for you - the per-resolution model at least means you pay for work done. **5. Freshchat** - Middle ground. Multichannel messaging, decent automation/human balance, and it plugs into Freshworks CRM. Sensible if you're already in that ecosystem or want something more structured than Tidio without Intercom pricing. **6. Zoho SalesIQ** - Only because of one thing: if you already run Zoho CRM, the integration is tight and the marginal cost is small. Otherwise it wouldn't make my list. **7. Botpress** - For when you or someone on your team can code and the bot needs to actually *do* things (hit your API, book appointments, update records). Far more flexible, far more setup work. One caveat on sourcing: a lot of the top-ranking "best chatbot" articles are published by chatbot vendors ranking themselves #1 - FastBots' list leads with FastBots, for instance. I've left those out and weighted toward products with broad independent adoption. Practical advice: watch the *pricing model*, not the sticker price. Per-seat plans penalize hiring, contact-based plans penalize list growth, and credit plans penalize success. For a small business, usage-based or flat pricing is usually the safer bet. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
