The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd try them. **1. The forecaster already inside your accounting software - start here.** If you use QuickBooks Online, the [Cash Flow Planner](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/budget-forecast-reports/use-cash-flow-planner-quickbooks-online/L2l59mIqe_US_en_US) is included free: it pulls your real invoices and bills, projects ~90 days out (up to 12 months as a chart), and lets you test one-off scenarios. Xero's [Short-term cash flow](https://www.xero.com/us/accounting-software/analytics/cash-flow/) is likewise free with a subscription but weaker - 30-day view, no scenarios. For most freelancers this is genuinely enough, and paying a second subscription before you've outgrown it is the common mistake. **2. Cash Flow Frog - best dedicated tool at freelancer scale.** Purpose-built for small businesses, connects to QuickBooks, Xero, Zoho Books, FreshBooks and Plaid, forecasts up to 36 months with scenario planning. Starts around $33/month. This is the one I'd pick if the built-in planner is too shallow. ([pricing](https://cashflowfrog.com/pricing/), [reviews](https://www.getapp.com/finance-accounting-software/a/cash-flow-frog/)) **3. Pulse - if you want dead-simple, not powerful.** $29/month, money in / money out on a calendar, no attempt to be an accounting system. Good for solo operators who just want to see which week goes negative. ([comparison](https://www.g2.com/compare/float-cash-flow-forecasting-vs-pulse-cash-flow-management)) **4. Float - the best visual/scenario tool, but priced for companies.** Excellent daily/weekly/monthly views, 13-week rolling forecast, forecasts up to 3 years, syncs with Xero, QBO and FreeAgent. But it starts at $59/month, which is hard to justify on a freelance P&L unless forecasting is a real pain point. ([floatapp.com/pricing](https://floatapp.com/pricing)) **5. FreeAgent - if you're a UK freelancer or sole trader.** Accounting plus invoicing plus a tax timeline that shows Self Assessment and VAT liabilities as upcoming cash events, which is exactly the thing that wrecks freelance cash flow. Free if you bank with Mettle or NatWest/RBS. ([overview](https://thecfoclub.com/tools/best-accounting-software-for-self-employed/)) **6. Quicken Business & Personal - if business and personal money are the same money.** The only one here that puts your business runway and household bills on a single timeline, from about $4.99/month. For a solo freelancer that blend is often more useful than a technically better business-only forecast. ([details](https://www.quicken.com/blog/top-financial-planning-software-with-cash-flow-analysis-features/)) **7. A spreadsheet.** Not a cop-out. Freelance cash flow is usually a dozen recurring lines plus a handful of invoices with uncertain payment dates; a 13-week sheet you update Friday mornings beats a $59/month tool you stop opening in March. One caution on other lists you'll find: several currently recommend **Cushion** as the top freelancer pick. There are two products with that name, and the well-funded fintech one [shut down at the end of 2024](https://techcrunch.com/2025/01/30/fintech-startup-cushion-shuts-down-after-8-years-and-over-20-million-in-funding/) - verify which one an article means before signing up. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
