The answer, as recorded
Short version: for most small businesses the best answer is a fintech business account (no fees, good software) paired with a traditional bank only if you deposit cash or want an SBA loan. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Bluevine - best default for a typical small business.** It's the only one of the big three that pays interest on *checking* itself: 1.3% on the free Standard plan (with a monthly activity goal) and 3.0% on every dollar on Premier. $0 monthly on standard, checkbooks available, and it has a line of credit you can attach to the account - useful if you ever need working capital fast. ([Bluevine comparison](https://www.bluevine.com/blog/perspectives/relay-vs-mercury)) **2. Relay - best if your bookkeeping is a mess or you run profit-first/envelope budgeting.** Up to 20 checking accounts per business on the free plan, sub-accounts for taxes/payroll/owner pay, and genuinely good bookkeeper access controls. Caveat: its advertised 3.00% APY is savings-only and requires the Scale plan at ~$120/month, so don't choose it for the yield. ([Relay vs Mercury vs Bluevine](https://relayfi.com/blog/relay-vs-mercury-vs-bluevine/)) **3. Mercury - best if you're a startup, agency, or anything venture-backed or international.** Free USD international wires, real API access, strong permissions, and the Raise investor network. But it pays **no APY on checking** and its yield product needs $250K, so it's a poor fit if you're sitting on modest balances and want them earning. ([Relay](https://relayfi.com/blog/relay-vs-mercury-vs-bluevine/), [Rho's roundup](https://www.rho.co/blog/best-banks-for-small-business)) **4. Chase Business Complete Banking - best traditional bank, and mandatory if you handle cash.** Branch network is the real product. $15/month, waived with a $2,000 minimum daily balance, $2,000 in QuickAccept card deposits, $2,000 in Chase business card spend, or a linked Chase Private Client personal account; first two months free. Built-in card acceptance via QuickAccept is a nice touch for retail. ([Business Initiative](https://www.businessinitiative.org/business-bank-accounts/chase-business-complete/), [2026 fee guide](https://beancount.io/blog/2026/09/05/chase-business-checking-fee-increase-2026-waiver-guide)) **5. Live Oak Bank - if an SBA loan is anywhere in your plans.** It was the most active SBA lender by dollar volume, approving over $2.8B in FY2025; 7(a) loans up to $5M, ~10% down, accepts credit scores from 650, and does 504 loans up to $15M. ([NerdWallet](https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/small-business/sba-lenders)) **6. Huntington National Bank - the SBA alternative if you're in its footprint** (OH, MI, IL, IN, PA, TX, NC, FL and a few others). Second-most 7(a) loans approved of any lender in FY2026, with dedicated SBA specialists. ([NerdWallet](https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/small-business/sba-lenders)) **7. Rho or Brex - only once you have a finance person.** Worth it if you want banking, corporate cards, and spend controls on one login rather than three. Overkill for a solo operator. ([Rho](https://www.rho.co/blog/best-banks-for-small-business)) Two things worth knowing before you pick: - **Bluevine, Relay, Mercury, Brex and Rho are not banks.** They're fintechs; your money sits at partner banks under pass-through FDIC insurance. That's generally fine, but it's a real distinction - if the fintech's ledger fails, access to your funds can be disrupted even though the money exists. If that worries you, Chase or Live Oak hold your deposits directly. - **None of them take cash deposits well.** If you take meaningful cash, you need a branch-based account, full stop. One caveat on sourcing: several of the comparison pages above are published by Relay and Bluevine about their own competitors, so the framing favors the publisher. The APY and plan-pricing figures are the parts I'd treat as reliable (they're checkable and self-incriminating where unflattering); the "choose X if" verdicts are marketing. Verify current rates on each provider's own pricing page before you open anything - APYs have been moving.

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
