The answer, as recorded
Based on what's current, here's how I'd actually rank these - the right answer depends mostly on your size and whether you need a budgeting *layer* on top of existing accounting, or an all-in-one. ## If you need a dedicated budgeting/planning tool **1. Martus** - My default recommendation for most mid-sized nonprofits. It's built specifically for this market (nearly half its reviewers are nonprofits), it does collaborative budgeting where program managers enter their own numbers, and it integrates with the fund accounting systems nonprofits already run. Starts around $6,650/year for the Essentials tier, with nonprofit discounts. Fast implementation compared to enterprise FP&A. ([Capterra](https://www.capterra.com/p/125789/MartusTools/), [G2 comparison](https://www.g2.com/compare/martus-vs-vena)) **2. Vena** - Pick this if your finance team lives in Excel and refuses to leave. It's Excel-native FP&A with a real database behind it, so you get version control and audit trails without retraining anyone. Highest-rated of the group (4.5/5), but it's a general-purpose tool - nonprofit specifics like restricted fund logic you build yourself. ([Capterra comparison](https://capterra.com/compare/76-131246/Intacct-vs-Vena)) **3. Cube or Jirav** - Lighter, cheaper FP&A layers that sit on top of QuickBooks. Worth a look if Martus is overkill but spreadsheets are breaking. ([Cube's nonprofit writeup](https://www.cubesoftware.com/blog/budget-software-for-nonprofits)) ## If you want accounting + budgeting together **4. Sage Intacct** - The strongest choice once you're past roughly $5M in revenue, especially multi-entity or multi-grant. Real dimensional reporting, and its Budgeting & Planning module means you don't bolt on a separate tool. Expensive and needs an implementation partner. ([Capterra](https://capterra.com/compare/76-131246/Intacct-vs-Vena)) **5. Aplos** - Best pick for small and mid-sized orgs. True fund accounting, restricted vs. unrestricted tracking, and budgeting-by-fund in the higher tiers, at $79-$129/month. Note that budgeting is on the Core plan and up - the $79 Lite tier doesn't include it. ([Capterra](https://www.capterra.com/p/118759/Aplos-Accounting/), [Software Advice](https://www.softwareadvice.com/nonprofit/aplos-profile/)) **6. MIP Fund Accounting** - Where I'd go if you're heavily government-funded with complex grant compliance and indirect cost allocation. Dated interface, strong compliance engine. ([G2](https://www.g2.com/compare/mip-fund-accounting-vs-martus)) **7. Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT** - Mainly if you're already on Raiser's Edge and want one vendor. Capable, but I'd only choose it for that integration reason. ## The honest baseline If you're under about $500K, **QuickBooks Online plus a well-built spreadsheet** genuinely covers it, and Propel Nonprofits publishes free budget templates. Don't buy an FP&A platform that costs more than the variance it helps you catch. ([Software Advice roundup](https://www.softwareadvice.com/nonprofit/nonprofit-accounting-software-comparison/)) One caveat on sourcing: several "best of 2026" listicles push products like BudgetPak and "Pebble Impact" into the top slots. Those pages look like low-quality SEO content with thin real-user evidence behind them, so I left them out of my ranking rather than repeating them. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
