The answer, as recorded
# Best benefits administration software for small businesses The right pick depends mostly on one thing: whether you want benefits bundled with payroll/HR, or you already have a broker you like. ## If you want benefits + payroll in one place (most small businesses) **1. Gusto** - My default recommendation for companies under ~50 employees. Benefits administration is included in every plan at no extra software cost, it acts as a licensed broker in most states, and deductions sync automatically to payroll (the single biggest source of small-business benefits errors). It's #1 on G2's Small-Business Grid for benefits admin. Downside: broker services aren't available in every state, and if you want to keep your existing broker you lose some of the value. **2. Rippling** - Better if you're growing fast, hiring in multiple states or countries, or want to manage devices/apps alongside HR. Strong automation and reporting, and you can bring your own broker. It's modular pricing, so it gets expensive as you add pieces, and it's more platform than a 10-person company needs. **3. Justworks** - Choose this if you want *someone else* to own compliance. As a PEO, you get large-group master health plans (often better rates and plan quality than a 15-person company could get alone) plus real HR support. You give up plan flexibility and pay a higher per-employee fee. **4. TriNet** - The other PEO worth quoting, generally for 20-100+ employees or industries needing specialized risk coverage. Deeper benefits bench and automated ACA/COBRA handling; less transparent pricing, so get a quote and compare it to Justworks side by side. ## If you already have a broker **5. Employee Navigator** - The standard here, used by 170,000+ companies, with 300+ carrier integrations so enrollment data flows to carriers without spreadsheets. It's usually free or heavily subsidized because your broker pays for it. Note: it acquired Ease and is sunsetting that platform, so don't start a new group on Ease today. **6. PlanSource** - Dedicated benefits admin (not an HR suite) with strong enrollment automation and carrier connectivity. Worth looking at if benefits complexity is your actual problem and you're happy with your existing payroll system. ## If you already run ADP or Paychex payroll **7. ADP Workforce Now / Paychex** - Not exciting, but adding their benefits module is often the lowest-friction path, and both scale past 100 employees without a migration. Expect less pleasant UX and more upselling than Gusto or Rippling. **My short version:** under 25 employees with no broker → Gusto. Growing fast or multi-state → Rippling. Want to offload compliance and get better plan rates → quote Justworks and TriNet. Happy with your broker → Employee Navigator, and let the broker cover the cost.
