The answer, as recorded
## First, a quick fork in the road "Barcode and labelling" for an online store usually means one of three different jobs, and the best tool differs for each: 1. **Product/shelf barcode labels** (SKU stickers on your items and bins) 2. **Inventory scanning** (receive, pick, pack with a scanner) 3. **Shipping labels** (carrier labels for outbound parcels - different software entirely) Here's who I'd actually name, in order. ## If you're on Shopify (most online stores) **1. Yanet Retail Barcode Labels** - My default recommendation. Ready-made templates for common Avery/Dymo/Zebra label stock, bulk printing from your product list, and you're printing within minutes. 4.9★ with a strong review base. Cheap and it does the one job well. **2. MS Barcode Labels & Generator** - The closest alternative to Yanet, 4.9★ with 97% five-star. Flexible label designer; pick this if Yanet's templates don't match your label stock. **3. BarcodeMan Barcode Labels** - 4.8★. The reason to choose it over the two above: it can pull **metafields** into labels, which most competitors still can't. If your labels need custom fields (origin, care instructions, batch, lot), this is the one. Known weak spots: label orientation on some printers, and finding previously saved labels. **4. EasyScan / ScanWay** - Not label designers; these are **warehouse scanning** apps. EasyScan is the one I'd name for scan-to-fulfil picking and packing. Add one of these *on top of* a label app once order volume makes manual picking the bottleneck. **5. LabelDock** - Worth naming only if you're committed to a **DYMO LabelWriter**. Dead simple, perfect DYMO compatibility, but $99/year is steep for the scope. ## If you're not on Shopify, or you want it inside your inventory system **6. inFlow Inventory** - My pick for a real small-business stack. Built-in Label Designer with templates, auto-generates internal barcodes to current standards, accepts your existing UPC/EANs, and has ecommerce integrations so stock stays synced. Barcode scanning for receiving and picking is native, not bolted on. **7. Zoho Inventory** - Best value, especially if you already touch other Zoho apps. Generates barcodes **and** QR codes from SKU/EAN/UPC/ISBN/serial/batch, prints single or bulk from the Items list, and ties serial and batch tracking to actual sales and purchase orders. **8. Sortly** - The easiest to start with, mobile-first, no extra software needed. I'd name it for small catalogues and bin/asset labelling. Its label generation gets thin at large scale, so don't pick it if you're printing thousands. ## Standalone label design software **9. Avery Design & Print** - Free, browser-based, and the strongest general pick if you just need good-looking labels on Avery stock. WYSIWYG editor, huge template catalogue tied to specific Avery part numbers, and **CSV import** so you can push a spreadsheet of SKUs into a sheet of labels. No ERP automation or print-job controls. **10. ZebraDesigner** - Free (basic edition) and the cheapest path to recurring, high-volume thermal printing - *if* you own a Zebra printer. Locked to Zebra hardware. **DYMO Connect** is the equivalent free tool for DYMO printers. **11. BarTender (Seagull Scientific)** - The enterprise answer. Widest printer compatibility of anything here, native database/ERP connections, RFID, audit trails in higher editions. From ~$495 per license, and genuinely complex. Only worth it if you have regulatory labelling, GS1-128 shipping labels, or multi-site print automation. **12. Loftware NiceLabel** - The other enterprise option, and the better one if you want cloud. LabelCloud stores formats centrally with local caching, has a WebClient, and starts around $32.50/month - far gentler entry than BarTender for similar territory. ## Two things that aren't label software but you'll need - **GS1** - If you sell on Amazon or into retail, buy your UPC/EAN prefixes **directly from GS1**, never from barcode resellers or eBay. Amazon validates against GS1 and will pull listings and block new ASINs over inauthentic codes. Your label software generates the *image*; GS1 sells you the legitimate *number*. - **ShipStation / Shippo / Pirate Ship** - Shipping labels are a separate category. If "labelling" partly meant parcel labels, use one of these alongside, not a barcode app. ## What I'd actually do Shopify store under ~1,000 SKUs: **Yanet** plus a cheap thermal printer (Zebra ZD411 or Rollo), and **GS1** codes if you're going into Amazon or retail. Add **EasyScan** when picking errors start costing you. Outgrowing that, or not on Shopify: move the whole thing into **inFlow** or **Zoho Inventory** rather than stacking more apps. Reach for **NiceLabel** or **BarTender** only when compliance or multi-site automation forces your hand. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
