The question asked, verbatim: best association management software for trade associations
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Novi AMS recommended
Novi AMS - My default recommendation for most US trade associations, and especially if you run QuickBooks Online.
- QuickBooks recommended

- QuickBooks Online recommended

- Sage Intacct mentioned
Caveats: QBO-centric (less ideal if you're on Sage Intacct or NetSuite), US-focused, and it's opinionated - great if its model fits you, friction if you need heavy customization.
- NetSuite mentioned
Caveats: QBO-centric (less ideal if you're on Sage Intacct or NetSuite), US-focused, and it's opinionated - great if its model fits you, friction if you need heavy customization.
- GrowthZone mentioned
GrowthZone - The best all-rounder for small-to-mid trade associations and the one I'd pit against Novi in a head-to-head.
- Nimble mentioned
Nimble AMS - Where I'd go once you're past roughly 5,000 member companies or $5M+ budget and have real IT capacity.

- Salesforce mentioned
Built on Salesforce, so you inherit the whole platform: unlimited custom objects, reporting, AppExchange integrations, and a labor market of Salesforce admins rather than vendor-specific consultants.
- Fonteva mentioned
Fonteva - The other Salesforce-native AMS, mature and stable with solid membership and events.
- MemberClicks mentioned
MemberClicks (Momentive Software) - Widely used and genuinely easy for a small team with no database person, with good bundled events and email.
- Personify mentioned
Two more worth knowing: Personify for large enterprise associations with big event and e-commerce operations, and ClubExpress if you're small, volunteer-run, and price is the binding constraint - it's cheap and functional, not elegant.

The answer, as recorded
Trade associations have a quirk that makes this different from picking software for a professional society: your members are **companies**, not individuals. So the thing that breaks most AMS deployments is org-level hierarchy (parent/subsidiary, multiple contacts per member, seat-based dues, rosters that change constantly) and dues billing that your accountant will accept. Rank candidates on that, not on feature-count. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Novi AMS** - My default recommendation for most US trade associations, and especially if you run QuickBooks Online. It was built by association staff specifically for trade associations and chambers, the company-based membership model is native rather than bolted on, and the two-way QBO sync is the real deal - dues, invoices, and payments land in your books without a monthly reconciliation ritual. It also includes the member-facing website, so you're not paying a separate web vendor. Highest user ratings in the category (4.8-4.9), consistently for support. Around $829/month flat. Caveats: QBO-centric (less ideal if you're on Sage Intacct or NetSuite), US-focused, and it's opinionated - great if its model fits you, friction if you need heavy customization. **2. GrowthZone** - The best all-rounder for small-to-mid trade associations and the one I'd pit against Novi in a head-to-head. Strong on the sales side of membership: prospect pipelines, renewal automation, non-dues revenue, sponsorships. Good org-based member records. Starts around $3,900/year, so cheaper entry than Novi for small staffs. Rated ~4.4. It's a broad platform rather than a deep one, and the website/CMS piece is weaker than Novi's. **3. Nimble AMS** - Where I'd go once you're past roughly 5,000 member companies or $5M+ budget and have real IT capacity. Built on Salesforce, so you inherit the whole platform: unlimited custom objects, reporting, AppExchange integrations, and a labor market of Salesforce admins rather than vendor-specific consultants. That's the strategic argument. The cost argument is the counterweight - Salesforce licenses sit *underneath* the AMS subscription, and implementation is a six-figure, multi-quarter project. **4. iMIS (ASI)** - The veteran enterprise option, strongest when you have genuinely complicated membership structures - tiered dues formulas based on member revenue or headcount, multi-chapter federations, certification programs alongside membership. Very configurable and proven at large member counts. The flip side is that it's an older architecture, the UI feels dated, and you will likely need an implementation partner on retainer. **5. Fonteva** - The other Salesforce-native AMS, mature and stable with solid membership and events. I rank it just behind Nimble mainly on momentum and roadmap confidence rather than capability; worth putting in the same RFP as Nimble and letting the demos decide. Tiered pricing from about $175/user/month, plus Salesforce. **6. MemberClicks (Momentive Software)** - Widely used and genuinely easy for a small team with no database person, with good bundled events and email. I put it lower for trade associations specifically because its DNA is individual membership, so company hierarchies and complex dues need configuration work, and reviews (~3.8) cluster around exactly that friction. From ~$3,500/year. Two more worth knowing: **Personify** for large enterprise associations with big event and e-commerce operations, and **ClubExpress** if you're small, volunteer-run, and price is the binding constraint - it's cheap and functional, not elegant. **How I'd run the decision:** shortlist Novi and GrowthZone if you're under ~2,000 member companies; shortlist Nimble, iMIS, and Fonteva if you're above ~5,000 or have certification/complex dues. In every demo, make them do *your* hardest case live - add a subsidiary to an existing member company, change the primary contact, generate the renewal invoice, and show it in the accounting system. Also ask, in writing, what data export you get on day one and on the day you leave; AMS migrations are the expensive part, and lock-in is the real cost. Budget 1.5-2× the subscription for year one to cover implementation and data cleanup.
