The question asked, verbatim: best api management platforms for agencies
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Zuplo mentioned
A lot of the "best API management 2026" listicles ranking Zuplo #1 are published by Zuplo.
- Kong mentioned
Kong Konnect - the default I'd reach for.
- Kong Konnect mentioned
Kong Konnect - the default I'd reach for.
- Kong Gateway mentioned
The gateway is open source, which matters enormously for agencies: if a client wants to take it in-house or move off your account, they can run Kong Gateway themselves without a rewrite.
- Tyk recommended
Tyk - my pick if you want self-hosted per client.
- Azure mentioned
Azure API Management - not because it's the best product, but because if the client is a Microsoft shop, this is the fight you don't want to have.
- Microsoft mentioned
Azure API Management - not because it's the best product, but because if the client is a Microsoft shop, this is the fight you don't want to have.
- Entra ID mentioned
Entra ID integration is genuinely deep, it bills to the client's existing Azure commitment (so it never touches your P&L), and it now covers MCP servers and agent endpoints.
- AWS mentioned
Amazon API Gateway - same logic for AWS clients.
- Gravitee mentioned
Gravitee - the specialist pick, and the one I'd name if your work is governance over APIs you didn't build.
- Apigee mentioned
Apigee - only if the client is already on Google Cloud and is big enough to care about API analytics and monetization as a business function.
- Google mentioned
Apigee - only if the client is already on Google Cloud and is big enough to care about API analytics and monetization as a business function.
- MuleSoft Anypoint mentioned
MuleSoft Anypoint - I'd name it last and reluctantly.
- Salesforce mentioned
Realistically it only comes up when a client already bought Salesforce and inherited it.

## Caveat up front A lot of the "best API management 2026" listicles ranking Zuplo #1 are published by Zuplo. Treat that ranking as marketing, not a verdict. Here's my actual take for an *agency* - which is a different problem than enterprise API management, because you need per-client isolation, cheap floors for small projects, and the ability to hand the thing over when the engagement ends. **1. Kong Konnect** - the default I'd reach for. Real multi-workspace/control-plane separation, so each client gets isolated config, RBAC, and analytics under one org. The gateway is open source, which matters enormously for agencies: if a client wants to take it in-house or move off your account, they can run Kong Gateway themselves without a rewrite. Downside is the pricing model - roughly ~$105/mo *per gateway service* plus per-million-request overages on Plus, which punishes a portfolio of many small clients. ([pricing comparison](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/api-gateway-pricing-comparison-2026), [Kong TCO](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/the-true-cost-of-kong-tco-analysis)) **2. Tyk** - my pick if you want self-hosted per client. Fully open-source gateway, licensing that's friendly to running separate isolated instances, and good API aggregation when you're stitching together a client's legacy services. You can deploy a dedicated stack per client on their own cloud account, which is the cleanest possible handoff story and sidesteps the "agency owns the infrastructure" liability problem. Annoyance: Tyk Cloud publishes no public pricing at any tier, everything routes through sales. ([tyk.io](https://tyk.io/)) **3. Azure API Management** - not because it's the best product, but because if the client is a Microsoft shop, this is the fight you don't want to have. Entra ID integration is genuinely deep, it bills to the client's existing Azure commitment (so it never touches your P&L), and it now covers MCP servers and agent endpoints. Costs: XML-based policies, slow provisioning, and per-environment billing that makes dev/staging/prod expensive. ([azure.microsoft.com](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/products/api-management)) **4. Amazon API Gateway** - same logic for AWS clients. Pure consumption pricing with a near-zero floor is the single best fit for the long tail of small client projects, and it's the one platform where a dormant client API costs you nothing. It's a gateway, not an API *program* - thin developer portal, weak lifecycle governance - so don't sell it as API management. **5. Zuplo** - worth a real look despite the self-promotion. Free tier at 100K req/mo and a $25/mo Builder plan give you an actual floor for prototypes and small clients, TypeScript policies mean your existing devs are productive day one instead of learning Lua or XML, and the developer portal is included rather than an upsell. Enterprise jumps to ~$1,000/mo. ([Zuplo pricing context](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/best-api-management-platforms-2026)) **6. Gravitee** - the specialist pick, and the one I'd name if your work is *governance over APIs you didn't build*. Its federated API management puts a control plane over third-party and client-owned gateways, which is precisely the agency situation: you inherited four clients each with a different stack and you need one view. Also the strongest of this group on event-native protocols (Kafka, MQTT, GraphQL, gRPC). ([gravitee.io](https://www.gravitee.io/platform/api-management)) **7. Apigee** - only if the client is already on Google Cloud and is big enough to care about API analytics and monetization as a business function. Excellent reporting, heavy to operate, overkill below a certain size. **MuleSoft Anypoint** - I'd name it last and reluctantly. It's an integration platform that happens to do API management, priced and staffed accordingly. Realistically it only comes up when a client already bought Salesforce and inherited it. ## What I'd actually do Standardize your team on **one** platform you know cold - Kong or Tyk - and run client workloads on **the client's own cloud account** wherever possible, using Azure APIM or AWS API Gateway when they're already committed to a hyperscaler. The failure mode for agencies isn't picking the wrong gateway; it's hosting fifteen clients' production traffic under your own vendor account and discovering you've become an unpaid managed service provider with the liability to match. Pick for exit-ability first, features second. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
