The answer, as recorded

Quick flag on the research: the "best answering service for ecommerce" search results are almost entirely SEO content written by the vendors themselves (Ringly, Influx, Richpanel, eesel all publish their own "best of" lists ranking themselves first). I've leaned on G2 ratings and published pricing pages where I could, but treat the percentage claims below as marketing, not measured results. ## If you mean literal phone answering **1. Smith.ai** - My default recommendation for most stores. Hybrid model: AI handles intake, North American live agents take anything real. Starts ~$300/month, and it has the strongest rating in the category (4.9/5 on G2 vs 4.5 for AnswerConnect, 3.8 for Ruby). Biggest caveat: it's built around law firms and home services, so order lookups aren't native - you'll be scripting it. **2. AnswerConnect** - Best if you want humans on every call, 24/7, no AI in the path. Per-minute: ~$350/mo for 200 minutes, $395 for 300, $575 for 400, with $1.85-2.50 per overage minute. No contract. Watch the overages - 200 minutes is maybe 100 calls. **3. Ringly.io** - The only one actually built for online stores: it connects to Shopify and looks up orders, processes returns, answers product questions on the call. $99/mo for 250 minutes, $349 for 1,000. This is the right shape for an ecommerce phone line, and the cheapest entry point. It's also the vendor behind most of the listicles above, so verify the "73% of calls resolved" claim on a trial before committing. **4. Ruby** - Best brand voice, genuinely good receptionists, and the one I'd pick for a high-AOV or luxury store where the phone call *is* the brand. But it's $3.39-4.90/minute, which means a Black Friday spike can push you past $1,500 in a month with no warning. Only worth it if margins absorb that. **5. Abby Connect** - Small dedicated receptionist teams rather than a big pool. Good middle ground on consistency vs. Ruby's price. ## If your volume justifies a real team **Influx** - Ramps a trained team in about a week, publishes pricing, flexible contracts. Best fit for a DTC brand that has outgrown per-minute billing. **Peak Support** is the quality-led option (SOC 2, PCI, HIPAA; quote-only, not cheap). **Boldr** if B Corp / ethical-BPO sourcing matters to you. ## The thing most stores actually need first Phone is usually the smallest channel. Most of your volume is email, chat, and "where is my order": - **Gorgias** - the Shopify default, deepest store-data integration, widest app ecosystem. Charges ~$0.90 per AI-resolved interaction, which adds up. - **Richpanel** - the cheaper, more aggressive-automation alternative at ~$0.30/conversation, with a strong self-service order-tracking/returns portal that deflects WISMO before it becomes a ticket. - **Zendesk** - only once you're enterprise-scale and need the customization. **What I'd do:** put Richpanel or Gorgias on email/chat with a self-service order portal first, then add Ringly.io on the phone line if calls still come in. That combination costs less than a single month of Ruby. Verify all pricing directly - these pages change often. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
