# Best accounting firms for startups The right answer depends mostly on whether you're VC-backed or bootstrapped, and how far along you are. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Kruze Consulting** - My default recommendation for venture-backed startups. They're a real CPA firm (not a bookkeeping service with a CPA bolted on), and they live inside the startup ecosystem: Y Combinator, Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, and Khosla regularly refer portfolio companies to them. They know cap tables, R&D credits, Delaware franchise tax, and what a diligence-ready set of books looks like. The common complaint is price - founders say it's expensive for what you get, with plans starting around $600-$750/month and climbing fast as you grow. Worth it if you've raised and will raise again. **2. Pilot** - The best fit if you're pre-seed/seed and want a software-led workflow. Monthly close, tax filing, R&D credits, and reporting delivered through a mix of automation and a dedicated accountant. Cheaper entry point than full-service CFO work; their CFO add-on starts around $1,750/month. Good when you need clean books and don't yet need strategic finance. **3. Burkland** - Where I'd point you once you're past seed and the finance function is getting complicated. Founded in San Francisco in 2004, they bundle accounting, tax, CFO, strategic finance, and HR under one roof - so you're not stitching together three vendors as you scale. Strongest for Series A and beyond. **4. Fondo** - The value pick, and a YC company themselves. Narrowly focused on startups: bookkeeping, R&D credits, and Delaware franchise tax. Their TaxPass starts at ~$950/year for federal, state, and Delaware franchise filings, which is dramatically less than full-service firms. If you're early, low-volume, and mainly need compliance handled correctly, start here. **5. Zeni** - AI-first bookkeeping with fractional CFO available. Plans start around $199/month, with Delaware franchise tax filing as a $300 add-on. Reasonable if you want a dashboard-driven view of cash and burn at a low price point. **6. Graphite Financial** - Also solid for VC-backed and growth-stage companies, with a consultative approach across accounting, tax, and FP&A. I'd consider it mainly as an alternative if Kruze or Burkland quote more than you want to pay. **One thing to skip:** **Bench** still shows up in older comparison articles and "best of" lists. It ceased operations in December 2024 - don't bother. **Quick heuristic:** bootstrapped and early → Fondo or Zeni. Raised a seed → Pilot. Raised and raising again → Kruze. Series A+ with real complexity → Burkland. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
