The anatomy of AI data-work recruitment scams

Real data-work programs never need your money, never hire over WhatsApp, and never pay you before you work. The patterns below cover nearly every data-work recruitment scam we track - each with the one check that defeats it.

1. The fake recruiter

An unsolicited message - LinkedIn, email, or SMS - claims to represent a known platform and offers guaranteed hours or unusually high rates. Real programs recruit through their own application pages, not cold outreach. The check: find the platform's application page yourself (our tracker links every official page) and apply there; never through a link the recruiter sent.

2. The messaging-app funnel

The "interview" moves to WhatsApp or Telegram within a message or two. Legitimate operators run applications on their own domains with a normal login. The check: refuse to continue on messaging apps; a real program loses nothing when you switch to its website.

3. The upfront fee

"Training kit", "verification deposit", "equipment fee" - paid data-work programs pay you; they do not charge onboarding fees. The check: any request for money ends the conversation.

4. The lookalike domain

A domain one letter off the real platform's, or the platform's name on a free subdomain, carrying a cloned application form that harvests personal documents. The check: compare the address bar against the official URL on our per-program pages; type it yourself.

5. The check-cashing advance

A "first payment" arrives before any work - a bad check or stolen-card transfer you are asked to partly forward. The bank later reverses it and you owe the balance. The check: no legitimate program pays in advance; never forward any part of a payment.
