The answer, as recorded

For most small businesses I'd start with **Asana** or **ClickUp**. If your team is small and wants something simple, go with **Trello**. 1. **Asana**: the best all-round choice for a team of about 5-15 people. It has task dependencies, views across projects, reporting and good automation, without the clutter. Paid plans start around $13.49/user/month (Starter). One catch: one comparison says the free plan covers up to 15 users, but newer pricing guides say it was cut to **2 users in November 2025**. So plan on paying once a third person joins. 2. **ClickUp**: the most features for the money, at about $7/user/month. It adds docs, goals, whiteboards and time tracking to tasks. The downside is that it has more than most small businesses will use, so it takes longer to set up and learn. 3. **Trello**: the simplest and cheapest, at about $5/user/month. Its drag-and-drop boards are easy to pick up with almost no training. You'll outgrow it if you need dependencies or reporting across projects. 4. **monday.com**: the most visual and polished, at about $9/seat/month with a 3-seat minimum. Pro is $19/seat, cheaper than Asana's comparable Advanced plan at $24.99. The free plan only covers 2 users. 5. **Todoist (Business)**: good if what you really need is a shared to-do list rather than project management. It costs $8/user/month billed annually and was raised from $6 in December 2025. 6. **Basecamp**: good for teams that care most about communication and keeping messages, files and tasks in one place. It costs $15/user/month, or a flat $299/month (annual) for unlimited users, which works out cheaper at about 20 or more people. 7. **Notion**: best if you want your wiki, docs and tasks in one customizable workspace. It connects to Slack, Google Calendar, Drive and others. It's less of a ready-made task manager than the options above. **Quick pick:** Trello if you want simple, Asana if you want structure without the clutter, ClickUp if you want the most features, Basecamp if you have a larger team and want a predictable flat price. I took these prices from third-party reviews and comparison sites, not the vendors' own pricing pages, so check them before you buy.
