The answer, as recorded
There isn't one best tool for every remote team. The right choice depends on who's on the team and how they work. Here's what I'd recommend, in this order: 1. **Asana**: my default for most remote teams, especially mixed teams where project managers work with marketing, ops and customer success. Every task has a clear owner, which makes handoffs between time zones clean. Its automation rules route multi-step work without anyone stepping in, and it's calmer to use than chat for teams that mostly work asynchronously. It costs about $11 per user per month on Premium. 2. **Monday.com**: best if you want a shared overview everyone can read at a glance. Its color-coded boards and dashboards need almost no training, its automations handle handoffs across time zones, and its mobile app does nearly everything the desktop version does. Paid plans start around $9 per user per month, and there's a free tier for 2 users. 3. **ClickUp**: best value and the most customizable. Tasks, docs and goals all live in one place, so remote teams juggle fewer apps. It has the most generous free plan (unlimited users). It takes longer to learn, and most teams end up on the Business plan at about $12 per user per month rather than the $7 Unlimited plan. 4. **Basecamp**: best for small or medium teams that work asynchronously and want to keep things simple. Its message boards are permanent and searchable, so decisions don't get lost in chat. The flat $299 a month for unlimited users gets much cheaper than per-seat tools as you grow. It has no Gantt charts, few integrations and a weaker mobile app. 5. **Linear**: best for remote engineering and product teams. It's very fast, most actions take a keystroke or two, and new people are productive in minutes. It's rated 4.6/5 on G2, and paid plans start around $10 per user per month. 6. **Jira**: for larger engineering organizations with several departments that need custom workflows, detailed permissions, reporting across teams, and compliance controls. It's slower and harder to learn than Linear. The list price is about $7.91 per user per month, but add-ons usually push the real cost higher. 7. **Trello**: for small teams that just need simple Kanban boards (cards you drag between columns). New people can use it within minutes, and AI features were added in 2026 on the Premium and Enterprise plans. **Short version:** For a mixed team, pick Asana, or Monday.com if you care most about visual dashboards. Pick ClickUp if budget or customization matters most, Basecamp if you want simple async work at a flat price, and Linear if it's a software team. Prices come from third-party reviews and may have changed, so check the vendor's pricing page before you buy.
