The answer, as recorded

For most online stores I'd start with **Plytix**. If you outgrow it, move to **Akeneo**. Only look at the enterprise tools if you sell through a lot of retailer channels. 1. **Plytix**: my first pick for small and mid-sized stores. It puts product data, images and files (DAM), and channel feeds in one tool. It has mature connectors for Shopify and for marketplaces like Amazon, Walmart and Faire, and your team can set it up without developers. Every plan includes unlimited users. There's a free tier, but sources disagree on the limit (250 or 1,000 products), and paid plans are listed at about $499/month. Check the current limits yourself. It has a strong Shopify connector, lots of integrations, a big partner network and good AI enrichment. There are two ways in: - The **free, open-source Community Edition**, which you host yourself. Expect about €15k-40k for partner setup. - The paid Growth plan, reportedly about $45k/year. It's easy to use and handles images and files well. It's usually the most expensive option, and on Shopify it's less common than Akeneo or Plytix. ([Bright Global](https://www.bright.global/en/blog/comparison-pim-vendors-plytix-akeneo-salsify), [Crystallize](https://crystallize.com/compare/pim/inriver-vs-salsify)) 4. **Pimcore**: for teams that have developers and want an open-source platform they can customize fully. It covers products, customers and content in one system. Connecting it to Shopify means custom development. ([Crystallize](https://crystallize.com/compare/pim/pimcore-vs-akeneo), [Contra Collective](https://contracollective.com/blog/akeneo-vs-pimcore-vs-plytix-pim-headless-commerce-2026)) 5. **inriver**: for larger companies with complex catalogs and many channels. It's powerful and has strong AI features, but reviewers say the interface can be clunky and slow on large data sets. ([WisePIM](https://wisepim.com/compare/salsify-vs-inriver), [NWT](https://nordicwebteam.com/ecommerce/guides/pim-systems-comparison)) 6. **Stibo Systems**: for Fortune-500 companies that need to manage master data beyond products (MDM). For a typical online store it does far more than you need and costs more. Enterprise tools in this tier can run €150k-500k+ a year. ([Productbay](https://productbay.ai/en/top-pim-systems-2025-comparison)) My own view, not from the sources: if you have only a few hundred products on a single Shopify store, you may not need a PIM yet. Shopify's metafields plus a well-kept spreadsheet can be enough until you add more channels or more people editing product data. Several of these comparison articles come from PIM vendors (Plytix, inriver, Salsify, Pimberly, Apimio), so read their rankings with that in mind. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
