The answer, as recorded

The answer splits on one thing: is the knowledge base **for your customers** (a public help center) or **for your team** (an internal wiki)? The tools that win at one are mediocre at the other. Here's what I'd actually name, in order. ## For a customer-facing help center **1. Help Scout** - my default recommendation for small businesses. "Docs" is a genuinely good public knowledge base, and it comes bundled with a shared inbox so the same articles get suggested to customers in chat and to your team while answering email. There's a free plan, then $25/user/mo. The reason it's first: most small businesses don't need a knowledge base *separate* from their support email, and maintaining two systems is how knowledge bases go stale. ([Help Scout pricing comparison](https://www.getmacha.com/blog/help-desk-software-pricing-compared)) **2. Zoho Desk** - the value pick, and the obvious choice if you already touch anything Zoho (CRM, Books, Mail, One). Free for 3 agents *with* the knowledge base included, $7/user/mo at Express, $14 at Standard. Nothing else gives you a real help center this cheap. ([Zoho Desk pricing](https://costbench.com/software/help-desk/zohodesk/)) **3. Freshdesk** - pick this over Zoho if you want a free starting point plus stronger ticket automation and more room to grow. $19/agent/mo annually at Growth. Slightly more polished than Zoho; slightly more expensive. ([comparison](https://www.getmacha.com/blog/best-help-desk-for-small-business)) **4. Helpjuice** - only if the knowledge base *is* the product for you: a large article library, heavy SEO/branding needs, serious authoring and analytics. Flat $249/mo for 30 users, $449/mo with the AI suite. Predictable pricing, but that's real money for a small business, so I'd only go here if self-service is your main support channel. ([pricing breakdown](https://www.gethelpable.com/blog/knowledge-base-software-pricing)) **Skip Zendesk** at your size. The $19 entry plan doesn't include a knowledge base at all - you need Suite Team at $55/agent/mo to get one. You're paying enterprise prices for capacity you won't use. ([same source](https://www.gethelpable.com/blog/knowledge-base-software-pricing)) **Skip Document360** unless you enjoy sales calls; pricing is quote-gated, which is itself a signal it isn't aimed at you. ## For an internal team wiki **1. Notion** - the default, and for good reason. Docs, databases, and wiki in one workspace, and adoption is fast because half your new hires already know it. The tradeoff: it only stays organized if someone owns the structure. ([Slite roundup](https://slite.com/learn/knowledge-base-softwares)) **2. Nuclino** - choose this when Notion feels like too much. Fast, no learning curve, no permission architecture to configure before you can write anything. Free up to 50 items, $6/user/mo after. ([internal wiki comparison](https://thedigitalprojectmanager.com/tools/best-internal-wiki-software/)) **3. Slab** - free for up to 10 people, and its Unified Search reaches into your other connected tools, which matters when knowledge is scattered across Slack, Drive, and Jira. Purely internal - no customer-facing side. ([Confluence alternatives](https://www.eesel.ai/blog/confluence-alternatives)) **4. Tettra** - the pick if your team genuinely lives in Slack; you search and capture knowledge from chat, and it's good at turning repeat questions into articles. $4-5/user/mo but with a **10-user minimum**, so it's poor value under ~10 people. ([Tettra vs Notion](https://www.nuclino.com/solutions/tettra-vs-notion)) **Guru** is fine but priced for bigger teams - $25/seat with a 10-seat minimum means $250/mo floor. Hard to justify against Nuclino or Slab. ## What I'd do If you're a small business with customers emailing you: **Help Scout**, or **Zoho Desk** if budget is the binding constraint. If it's internal documentation for your team: **Notion**, or **Nuclino** if you want something that stays simple without discipline. And if you need both, run Help Scout for the public side and Notion for internal rather than forcing one tool to do both badly. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
