The answer, as recorded

For a small business, the honest first question is whether you need an intranet *product* at all - you may already own one. Here's how I'd rank them: **1. What you already pay for: SharePoint (Microsoft 365) or Google Sites (Google Workspace)** If you're on M365 Business Standard or Google Workspace, an intranet is included at no extra cost. SharePoint's modern communication sites are genuinely decent now, and Google Sites is trivially easy (Workspace Business Starter is ~$7/user/mo, intranet included). For a team under ~50 people who mostly need a news page, policy docs, and a staff directory, this is usually the right answer and I'd try it before spending anything. Downside: neither gives you engagement features or a good mobile app, and SharePoint's information architecture will drift into a mess without someone owning it. **2. Connecteam - if your people are not at desks** Free up to 10 users, then roughly $29/month flat for a tier of users rather than per-seat, which is dramatically cheaper than per-user intranet pricing at small headcounts. Mobile-first: news feed, chat, document library, plus scheduling and time tracking. Best fit for retail, hospitality, trades, construction, healthcare. **3. Jostle - if you want the simplest real intranet** Around $5/user/mo. Built for small and mid-sized orgs that care about culture and adoption over governance and customization. Low admin burden, employees actually use it. It's deliberately not very configurable - that's the point. **4. Blink - frontline again, but more polished comms** From about $4.50/user/mo up to 1,000 employees. Strong app, feels like a consumer social feed, good for deskless teams that want more communication depth than Connecteam's operations-heavy approach. **5. Happeo - if you're Google Workspace-native and growing** Best fit roughly 150-2,000 employees, deep Google Workspace integration (also supports M365), with a solid search/knowledge layer non-technical staff can maintain. Fast setup. No free trial, quote-based pricing - so it's a step up in cost and commitment. **6. Guru - if the real problem is "nobody can find anything"** Wiki plus AI search that surfaces answers inside Slack/Teams/the browser rather than making people visit a portal. Choose this if your pain is knowledge retrieval, not company news. **Worth naming but I'd skip at small scale:** Simpplr, Unily, LumApps, Staffbase, Workvivo, Interact, Oak Engage. All good platforms, all priced and architected for hundreds-to-thousands of employees; you'd pay enterprise money for governance you don't need. Oak Engage is the most small-business-friendly of that group if you want one to look at. My default recommendation: exhaust SharePoint or Google Sites first, and move to Connecteam (deskless) or Jostle (desk-based) when you hit a wall on mobile access or adoption.
