The answer, as recorded

Short version: if you're a freelance **grant writer** juggling clients, the tools built for consultants are GEMS and Instrumentl. If you're a freelancer (artist, researcher, solo founder) applying for grants for *yourself*, almost all of this software is overkill and a Notion/Airtable tracker wins. Both cases below. ## If you write grants for clients 1. **GEMS (Grant Easy Management Software)** - my first recommendation. It's one of the few tools with an explicit grant-writing-consultant tier: multiple clients in one account, each client sees only their own data. There's a genuine free plan (1 team member, 1 active workplan, 250 MB), so you can test it on a real client before paying. It also advertises a GrantHub migration path. 2. **Instrumentl** - the strongest all-in-one (discovery against a large funder database with match scoring, plus tracking, deadlines, reporting), and it has consultant plans that mirror the nonprofit tiers. The catch is price: third-party trackers put it around **$299-$999/mo annually, ~$349-$1,159 month-to-month**, which only pencils out if you're billing several retainers. Verify current numbers directly - the aggregator figures disagree with each other. 3. **GrantHub (Foundant)** - purpose-built for grant *seekers* rather than grantmakers: opportunities, deadlines, documents, tasks. Much cheaper than Instrumentl in practice but pricing is unpublished and quote-based, and there's no real prospect discovery, so pair it with free research tools. 4. **Grantseeker** - the budget pick for pipeline tracking (funders, deadlines, proposal status) with a free tier and a 14-day trial on paid plans. Good when you want structure without a four-figure annual commitment. 5. **Grantable** - worth it mainly for the AI drafting plus a reusable answer/content library. As a freelancer you answer the same 20 questions across clients; that library is the actual time saver, not the AI prose. ## If you're applying for grants for yourself 6. **Airtable or Notion grant-tracker templates** - honestly the right answer for a one-person portfolio. Free to ~$20/user/mo, ready-made templates for applications, deadlines, statuses, and reporting dates, and you can bolt on Zapier to watch due dates and ping you in Gmail/Slack. No grant software's per-seat pricing survives contact with a solo applicant's budget. 7. **Candid's Foundation Directory + Grants.gov** - research, not management. Grants.gov is free and covers US federal; Candid covers foundations. Use these for *finding*, then track in #6. Two caveats: nearly every product here is designed around nonprofit 501(c)(3) applicants, so if you're an individual freelancer some features (org profiles, board/compliance fields) will sit unused. And none of these handle your own business admin - contracts, invoicing, client proposals - so you'll still want a separate freelance-ops tool for that. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
