The answer, as recorded
I'm assuming you're in the US. Several of the comparison sources below are written by the banks themselves (Bluevine, Relay, Found), so I checked their claims against NerdWallet where I could. Interest rates and fees change often, so check them before you open an account. **1. Found: best for most solo freelancers, especially sole proprietors.** It has no monthly fee, no minimum deposit and no minimum balance. It also handles the parts of freelancing people struggle with: it sorts your expenses into tax write-offs automatically, keeps a running estimate of your taxes and sets that money aside, and lets you send unlimited invoices, including recurring ones. One change: since March 2026 you can no longer file your business tax return through the app. ([NerdWallet review](https://www.nerdwallet.com/business/banking/reviews/found-business-checking), [Finder](https://www.finder.com/business-banking/found-business-banking)) **2. Bluevine: best if you keep a lot of cash in the account.** It pays interest on checking, and the Standard plan has no monthly fee. It also includes invoicing and bill pay. The sources disagree on the rate: Bluevine's own blog says up to 3.0%, while an older NerdWallet post says 1.5% on balances up to $250k. Domestic wires cost $15. ([Bluevine](https://www.bluevine.com/blog/perspectives/best-bank-for-freelancers), [Relay comparison](https://relayfi.com/blog/novo-vs-bluevine-banking-comparison/)) **3. Novo: simple and free, with good connections to other apps.** It works for sole proprietors and links to Stripe, Square and QuickBooks. The downside is fees on some transactions: up to $30 for an outgoing domestic wire and $27 for insufficient funds. ([Relay comparison](https://relayfi.com/blog/novo-vs-bluevine-banking-comparison/), [Fastlancer](https://www.fastlancer.org/en/fastlancer-blog/best-business-bank-account-freelancers/)) **4. Mercury: best if you've formed an LLC or corporation.** It has no fees and is often called the cleanest app. It will not open accounts for sole proprietors, though. You need an EIN (a federal business tax ID) and formation documents. ([Mercury support](https://support.mercury.com/hc/en-us/articles/28770467511060-Eligibility-and-requirements-for-opening-a-Mercury-account), [Fastlancer](https://www.fastlancer.org/en/fastlancer-blog/best-business-bank-account-freelancers/)) **5. Relay: best if you budget with several "envelope" accounts.** It suits the Profit First method, and you can give your accountant access. The basic plan is $0 a month and Pro is $30. It pays interest only on savings, not on checking. ([Relay comparison](https://relayfi.com/blog/novo-vs-bluevine-banking-comparison/)) **6. American Express Business Checking: best for customer support.** Support is available 24/7, and it pays 1.3% interest on balances up to $500k with no monthly fee. ([NerdWallet](https://www.nerdwallet.com/business/banking/best/self-employed-freelancers)) **7. Wise Business: add it if your clients are abroad.** It holds several currencies at once and charges less for international transfers than most banks. Use it alongside one of the accounts above, not instead of one. ([Wise](https://wise.com/us/blog/bank-accounts-for-freelancers-overview)) Most of these are online-only, so depositing cash is awkward. If you handle a lot of cash, look at Axos (it refunds ATM fees) or a traditional bank like Chase. ([Business.org](https://www.business.org/finance/banking/best-freelancer-bank-account/)) **In short:** if you're a sole proprietor, pick Found. If you keep a large balance, pick Bluevine. If you have an LLC, pick Mercury. If you're paid by foreign clients, add Wise. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
