What actually matters for a distributed team is cheap read-only seats (so you're not rationing access), good async sharing (Slack/email delivery, shareable links, scheduled reports), and a low enough skill floor that people in different time zones aren't blocked waiting on one analyst. That's what I ranked on.\n\n**1. Metabase** - My default recommendation for most small-to-midsize teams. Open-source core, free self-hosted or ~$90/month cloud, and it's the fastest thing to go from \"we have a Postgres database\" to \"the whole team is browsing dashboards.\" Non-technical people genuinely use its query builder, which is the thing that actually determines whether BI succeeds. Weak spot: modeling gets thin at scale.\n\n**2. Microsoft Power BI** - The right answer if you're already on Microsoft 365. ~$14/user/month is the best price-to-capability ratio in the market, and the Teams integration means dashboards show up where distributed people already talk.
