## The answer, as recorded

Asked on 2026-10-09 through Claude (Anthropic) with web search (model claude-opus-5).

> The honest answer depends on one thing: whether your remote team is US-only-but-multi-state, or spread across countries. The products barely overlap. Here's who I'd actually name, in order.
>
> ## If your remote team is US-based across many states
>
> **1. Rippling** - my default pick. It has the strongest benefits admin of the mainstream HR platforms (9.4 on G2 vs Justworks 9.1 and Gusto 8.8), handles multi-state registration and compliance well, and it's the only one that also manages laptops and app access - which matters more than people expect when you're shipping devices to people you'll never meet. Downside: modular pricing adds up, and it's more platform than a 15-person team needs.
>
> **2. Justworks** - best if you want someone else to own the liability. As a PEO it pools your employees onto its own large-group health plans, so a 20-person distributed company gets pricing and plan quality it could never buy alone, and the state-by-state compliance burden becomes Justworks' problem. The trade-off is you're renting their plans, not choosing your own, and it gets expensive per-head as you grow past ~75 people.
>
> **3. Gusto** - the right answer for small and cost-sensitive teams. Cheap

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
