## The answer, as recorded

Asked on 2026-10-18 through Claude (Anthropic) with web search (model claude-opus-5).

> Short version: for most small businesses the best answer isn't a famous firm - it's a local CPA for tax and advisory, paired with a cheaper outsourced service for the monthly bookkeeping. Here's who I'd actually name, roughly in the order I'd try them.
>
> **1. A local/regional CPA firm (my default recommendation)**
> If you have real complexity - multi-state, inventory, an S-corp election, partners, a sale or succession coming - nothing beats a human CPA who knows your state. Find one through the [AICPA](https://www.aicpa-cima.com/) or your state CPA society directory and interview two or three. Ask: who does my actual work, what's the all-in annual fee, and do you do planning or just filing? A good one costs $1,500-5,000/yr for a small entity and saves more than that. Firms like **Yount, Hyde & Barbour** are the model here - industry depth plus proactive tax strategy, aimed at established businesses in the roughly $2M-15M range ([hireinsouth](https://www.hireinsouth.com/post/best-accounting-firms-for-small-business)).
>
> **2. 1-800Accountant - best "one provider does everything" for Main Street businesses**
> Bookkeeping, payroll, tax prep, and year-round advisory with a dedicated account
